Website management and authoring tools Chapter 3

Outline Web authoring tools Blogging platform Wikis Website publishing tools Content Management Systems (CMS)

Web authoring tools Web authoring tools are used to create Web content and cover a wide range of software programs where users can download to their computer or access online.

Web authoring tools

Web authoring tools - Word Processors

Web authoring tools-Desktop Publishing Programs Desktop publishing programs, like Adobe InDesign and Scribus are designed for producing material like newspapers, magazines, books and Web pages. Like word processors, desktop publishing programs provide a WYSIWYG interface. Their advanced Web authoring options, such as page layout and style elements, give users more control over the page's appearance. These programs also support multimedia objects, like images, graphics or audio files. Completed pages can be converted to both HTML and CSS files.

Web authoring tools-Online Web Page Builders Website hosting sites usually offer their customers many web-authoring tool options to create and maintain their web pages online. Tools can include Web page builders, shopping systems, audio/visual editors, and domain options. The builders incorporate many web authoring tools, including word processing, graphic editing, templates, and layout schemes. Webpage builders have two main editing options: HTML or a non-HTML interface. Users who have limited HTML knowledge can use the non-HTML interface to drop and drag items to create layouts and use the text option to type in content

Web authoring tools-HTML Editors HTML editing programs like Adobe Dreamweaver are some of the most powerful web authoring tools available. They are generally used by professional Web designers to create commercial websites. Most HTML editors are similar to web page builders in offering users HTML or non-HTML interfaces. The non-HTML interface allows the user to see how the web page will look when it is uploaded to the Internet. HTML editors are used to type raw code, much as one would in a plain text document like a word processor, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript or XML. Most of the work is performed using a built-in text editor. HTML editors feature HTML validation checkers that will run through a web page and check for markup errors and accessibility validation issues.

Web authoring tools-Plain Text Editors Basic text editors like Notepad are also a useful Web authoring tool for those familiar with the code. Unlike word processors or desktop publishing programs, plain text editors do not apply additional code to what appears in the document. Plain text editors are also useful for quickly making edits to completed pages that require updates

Blogging Platform - WordPress.org

Blogging Platform - WordPress.org Almost all professional bloggers choose self-hosted WordPress.org to power their blogs and they will rarely find an exception. The disadvantage here is that the self-hosted WordPress.org blogging platform requires effort and learning on the user’s side. The user can still install free themes and designs from WordPress’s theme directory but they will need to learn how to setup their website, create an account with a web hosting company (which is generally not free), learn some coding, and do other managerial tasks on their own, which other blogging platforms perform for them.

Blogging platform - WordPress.org

Blogging Platform Blogger (previously Blogspot) is one of the most primitive blogging platforms which hosts millions of blogs out there. It is free, comes with Google account, and lets the user instantly create their blog with the address of – yoursite.blogspot.com. The user can even use a custom domain e.g. www.yoursite.com and let’s run that blog under their custom domain. Blogger comes with in-house templates and designs that the user can use to get a head start but these designs are not so cool and a little dated. Blogger lets the user tweak the design to some length but complete control of their site cannot be achieved, because Blogger.com doesn’t let the user completely tweak the look and feel of their blog. Blogger.com

Blogging Platform The Drawbacks of Blogger.com Blogger.com doesn’t let the user customize their blog completely. There are limitations that would come in their way when they try to monetize the blog, use third-party scripts, or do some conditional coding. Blogger.com doesn’t support third-party plugins like WordPress does. So it will become quite difficult to add extra layers of functionality to your site and it will stay primitive. Google owns the user blog that is created on Blogger.com. The user cannot claim the content as theirs and if Google decides to shut it down, their content will also go down the drain since the content resides on Google’s servers, not theirs. The user can of course backup posts, designs, and other things from their blogger blog but it is quite troublesome to move the blog to another blogging platform, should the user decide to discontinue using Blogger.com. Tomorrow, if Google introduces newer rules on Blogger.com, the user will have to abide by those rules since they are using their platform to run their blog. It is often not a best practice to run their ship on someone else’s fuel. Ironically a blog that runs on Blogger.com is not very SEO friendly and the user has less control over tweaking the SEO of the site, which affects rankings, and traffic and hence decides the ROI. Blogger.com

Blogging platform F ree and offers greater control The user do have some control over the code, design, and functionality of your website but then again, the user cannot use third-party plugins or plug other software into their blogs that easily, compared to a self-hosted WordPress.org blog. But compared to Blogger.com, WordPress.com is more useful and provides more controls to manage the website. WordPress.com

Blogging platform There are literally thousands of website designs and themes available in the WordPress.com themes gallery which the user can use for free. There is a big disadvantage of WordPress.com though – the user cannot monetize their website using WordPress.com since it won’t allow them to embed third-party scripts or advertisements. Blogging platform - Tumblr

Blogging platform - Tumblr

Blogging platform Tumblr

Blogging platform - Medium K nown for its long-form content curation style which most authors at Medium have adopted. It is a perfect fit for the user if they want to tell their personal stories and not necessarily talk about a particular topic or niche. While Tumblr is known for microblogs, Medium is known for its long-form content which is presented in the form of stories, experiences, and memoirs.

Blogging platform - Medium Medium is free to use and like Blogger, WordPress, and Tumblr, the user do not have to worry about hosting their website and managing all the technical aspects of running their blog or website. One disadvantage of Medium is that there is no way the user can customize their website to look different from other blogs hosted on Medium since all the blog designs look exactly the same. There is no way to add third-party scripts, advertisements, or other content in your blogs, so functionality is limited here as well.

Wikis The term ‘wiki’ originated from the Hawaiian language, referring to something that is ‘fast’ or ‘quick.’ The concept behind a wiki database is similar—it helps to quickly create, add, edit, and share information on a website. This content can come in a variety of formats, including videos, files, links to other news, images, text, audio, etc. The very first wiki software was developed back in 1994/95 by Ward Cunningham under the name Wiki Wiki Web.

Wikis Wikis are designed for collaborative authoring . Users can add, modify, or delete content right from their web browser. A collaborative tool that allows user to contribute and modify one or more pages, Wikis are collaborative in nature and facilitate community-building within a course. Essentially, a wiki is a web page with an open-editing system.

Wikis As a side note, although many do, not all wikis have the name in their title. For instance, Fandom is a collection of wikis for entertainment-related content, and Baseball Reference is a wiki for baseball content related to current teams and players, as well as historical stats and scores.

Content Management Systems A content management system (CMS) is a computer application that allows publishing, editing, modifying, organizing, deleting, and maintaining content from a central interface. A system by which users can enter and upload content (text, images, audio, video, etc.) and have that content published on the Web. CMS’s supports multiple users working collaboratively, so many people can work collaboratively on authoring content for a particular site. An important feature of these systems is version control, so as users create or edit content, multiple backup versions of that content are saved so users can revert back to an earlier version if they mess up CMSs have been available since the late 1990s.

Content Management Systems

Three of the most popular CMS's are

Content Management Systems

Content Management Systems Drupal Drupal is a popular and customizable content management framework. This makes it suitable for developing both simple websites and complex web applications. It includes thousands of modules and themes to attract web audiences, grow brand awareness and build a community. Content Management Systems Joomla! Joomla! is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) for publishing web content . The platform offers numerous advanced features, allowing you to easily make a website or an app. Joomla supports various content types and custom fields, including gallery, calendar, and checkboxes. This allows you to create a dynamic website without using third-party plugins. Joomla is written in Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP), uses object-oriented programming techniques and software design patterns, and stores data in a Structured Query Language (MySQL) database

Content Management Systems Joomla! Joomla! Advantages More advanced user management – Joomla offers a more advanced system for user access controls and user management out of the box. Flexible for different content types – Joomla’s components and modules give you a bit more flexibility for displaying non-standard content types. Multilingual support – Joomla has multilingual support built-in to the core, while WordPress requires you to use a third-party plugin. Multiple templates – Joomla lets you use different templates for different pieces of content, whereas you can only use one WordPress theme.

Content Management Systems WordPress What’s The Difference Between WordPress.org and WordPress.com?

Content Management Systems WordPress Most of the time, when people say “WordPress”, they mean the self-hosted WordPress available at WordPress.org. If users want to truly own their website, self-hosted WordPress.org is almost always the best option. All they need to do to get started with self-hosted WordPress is a WordPress hosting service and a domain name. MORE INFO https://kinsta.com/blog/wordpress-com-vs-wordpress-org/
