Three neurohormonal systems —a norepinephrine system, a dopamine system, and a serotonin system.

Multiple centers in the brain stem. These neurons secrete different transmitter substances (specified in parentheses). The neurons send control signals upward into the diencephalon and cerebrum and downward into the spinal cord From To Brainstem (Medulla+ pons+ midbrain) Diencephalon Cerebrum Cerebellum Cord

Define Limbic system entire neuronal circuitry that controls emotional behavior and motivational drives

vegetative functions of the brain body temperature, osmolality of the body fluids, and the drives to eat and drink and to control body weight.

Structures of Limbic System Hypothalamus septum, paraolfactory area, anterior nucleus of the thalamus, portions of the basal ganglia, hippocampus, and amygdala

Limbic Cortex Surrounds the Limbic System beginning in the orbitofrontal area on the ventral surface of the frontal lobes, extending upward into the subcallosal gyrus then over the top of the corpus callosum onto the medial aspect of the cerebral hemisphere in the cingulate gyrus, and finally (4) passing behind the corpus callosum and downward onto the ventromedial surface of the temporal lobe to the parahippocampal gyrus and uncus.

Effects Caused by Hypothalamic Lesions Bilateral lesions in the lateral hypothalamus will decrease drinking and eating almost to zero, often leading to lethal starvation. Bilateral lesions of the ventromedial areas of the hypothalamus cause excessive drinking and eating, as well as hyperactivity and often frequent bouts of extreme rage on the slightest provocation.

Limbic System REWARD AREA PUNISHMENT REGION

tranquilizers function in psychotic states suppress many of the important behavioral areas of the hypothalamus and its associated regions of the limbic brain.

Effects of Bilateral Ablation of the Amygdala The Klüver-Bucy Syndrome . is not afraid of anything, has extreme curiosity about everything, forgets rapidly has a tendency to place everything in its mouth and sometimes even tries to eat solid objects has a perverted social outreach Has perturbed communication and interpersonal relationships
