CHARACTER STRENGTH AND VIRTUE

Character strength It is the natural capacity for behaving, thinking or feeling in a way that allows for optimal functioning and performance. Psychological ingredients that define the virtues.

Virtue It is behavior showing high moral standards. Character strength are routes to display virtues . Valued by moral philosophy and religion.

The concept of character strengths was popularized by Martin Seligman and Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi’s research in the early 2000s. The development of the character strengths and virtues(CSV) handbook (2004) represented the first attempt to identify and classify positive psychological trait.

Significance of character strength Brings greater understanding, perceptivity and perspective in our life. Provides a sense of direction. Generates hope and optimism. Enhances confidence and self-esteem. Creates a feeling of vitality and energy. Increases motivation and helps achieve one’s goals.

VIA classification Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman devised the values in action framework to conceptualize character strengths. According to this classification there are 6 virtues and 24 character strengths.

Six virtues Wisdom- acquisition and use of knowledge Courage- strengths that involve the exercise of will to accomplish goals. Humanity-inclination towards forming connections with others Justice- strength that underlie healthy community life Temperance- strengths buffer us against excesses Transcendence-help to establish meaningful connection with the larger universe

Wisdom and knowledge Creativity-thinking in a novel way Curiosity-taking an interest in ongoing experience Open-mindedness-thinking thoroughly and examining from all sides Love of learning-mastering new skills, acquiring knowledge Perspective-seeing the big picture, ability to counsel others

C ourage Bravery-not shrinking from threat, challenge. Persistence-persisting in a course of action in spite of obstacles Integrity-honesty, presenting oneself in a genuine way Vitality- enthusiasm, energy, approaching life with excitement

Humanity Love-valuing close relationship, genuine warmth Kindness-compassion, doing favors and good deed for others Social intelligence-being aware of the motives and feelings of other people and oneself

Justice Citizenship- loyalty, teamwork, being loyal to group Fairness-treating all people the same Leadership-positively influencing others

Temperance Forgiveness-accepting others shortcomings, mercy Humility-letting one’s accomplishment speak for themselves Prudence-careful about one’s choices, not doing things that later might be regretted Self-regulation-self control, managing impulses, being disciplined

Transcendence Appreciation of beauty and excellence- noticing and appreciating beauty Gratitude- being aware of and thankful for the good things that happen hope-expecting the best in the future Humor-bringing smiles to other people, liking to laugh Spirituality-having higher purpose and meaning of the universe

Clifton’s strengthsfinder Donald Clifton and Edward Anderson developed clifton’s strengths finder to define strength. Strength= Talent+ Knowledge and skill They identifies 34 strengths
