TOPIC: CHARACTER SKETCH
Sparrows By K.A.Abbas
Text Book: ‘Stories, Plays and Tales of Adventure’
CHARACTER SKETCH OF RAHIM KHAN
ANCHOR 1-
Welcome to today’s lesson. Today, we will learn ‘how to write a character sketch’. Do you know
what does a character sketch mean? The word character sketch consists of two words –
character and sketch .
Character means reputation
Bwv cirqr
Sketch means a portrait or a drawing.

Now you must be thinking that while writing an essay on a person you do the same. But you will
see the difference between the two. While writing an essay, we are free to use our own
imagination about a person.

So for writing a character sketch we have to read the text. But before reading the lesson
Look at your classmates. Everyone is different, coming from different backgrounds, families and cultures. some of them
are considered as ‘good’ people by you while others may be ‘bad’ people according to you. ‘Bad’ ones are hated and
‘Good’ ones are liked. We all tend to label people but have we ever tried to think or find out the reason behind their
behaviour. Do we ever try and make an effort to find that cause and sympathize with them? Today we are going to read
about such a person who changes into a very cruel and harsh man because of the circumstances raised by his own family,
religion and the society against him. Today we will focus upon Rahim Khan, the main character in “Sparrows” by K.A.
Abbas.

Scene - Following conversation goes on in the chaupal where 10-12 villagers ( Hindhu and Muslims) have gathered for
evening smoke and gossiping.
(Hookah and bidis can be shown).
Rahim Khan wearing grey Kurta Salwar and cap, six feet tall, strong and broad, fifty year old with plough on his shoulders
and driving his two oxen, he walked through the main street of the village. As he approached the chaupal where a dozen
or so peasants were collected for their evening smoke, the hilarious tones of gossip died down to cautious whispers. It was
only when he had vanished around the corner and the heavy tread of his footsteps was heard no more. Kalu speaks.
Kalu:(who is about fifty and is wearing an unclean dhoti kurta and small turban passing the communal hookah to another)
“there goes the hard hearted devil”
Nanha (a fat sweet seller, wearing dhoti and banyan, bald, middle aged) “He’s getting worse and worse everyday. Only
yesterday he beat poor Ramu’s child for throwing a pebble at his oxen”
Ramnath (Zaildaar, wearing a white kurta pyjama and a turban) “And the other day he very nearly killed my mare for
straying into his field”
Patel (old grey haired, toothless mouth wearing dhoti kurta and turban) “Hare Ram! Hare Ram! I have never seen such a
cruel man. He has compassion neither for the child nor for the helpless animal. No wonder his own sons have run away
from home.”
ANCHOR 2
Well children! You must have enjoyed the conversation. What did you gather about the character of Rahim Khan? Let us
try to describe him with the help of following points;

PES/ENG/XI/026
(The points will appear on the screen with the voice of the anchor.)
Points to be described
•Name/ full name
•Age
•Family
•Occupation
•Physique: strong/ weak,
Attractive, hobbies, ambitions
•Habits/nature
•Relations with family/society
( Now coming to the first point Name. Children I am sure you know the name of the main character we are
focusing on. Yes you are right.)
·He is Rahim Khan.
(What is his age?)
·He is 50 years old.
(Now which family does he belong? His name Rahim Khan tells us that)
·He belongs to a Muslim Family.
(What does he do? He works in his fields with his oxen. So )
·He is a farmer.
(VO- Now you have seen him carrying plough on his shoulders. So is he weak or strong? Of course)
·He is tall, broad and strong despite his 50 years.
( VO- Now what can you say about his habits and nature? As the people talk about him, you can say)
·he is hard, harsh, haughty and aloof.
Relationship with family and society.
( You have seen that )
·The people are afraid of him.
·They are annoyed of his cruelties.

PES/ENG/XI/026
·He is cruel to his wife, his sons and animals.
Anchor 3
So, children! From the conversation you think that everyone in the village hates Rahim Khan. But when he was young, he
was not so harsh and hard hearted. He was a very good player of kabaddi. He had a soft corner for a Hindu girl of his
village who fell in love with him. He wanted to marry him. But his parents and the society did not allow the inter caste
marriage. He wanted to join a touring circus but his father being a landlord let down this job. So both his ambitions were
not fulfilled. His father married him to a muslim girl. Now he became frustrated and could not reconcile with her. He held
his parents and society responsible for his frustration. He becomes cruel to his wife and even does not spare his own sons
Nuru and Bundu and also his two oxen. His sons could not bear him and leave the home one after the other and one day
his wife too leaves him alone.
So now we can add some more points;
(The lines will appear on the screen one by one and the anchor’s voice at the back.)
·When he was young, he was the best player of Kabbaddi and wrestling of his village.(Punjabi)
·He was very handsome and lovable. (Punjabi)
·He fells in love with Radha, a Hindu girl of his village.(Punjabi)
·He had two ambitions.(Punjabi)
·First ambition to marry Radha.(Punjabi)
·Second ambition to join a touring circus.9Punjabi)
·Both his ambitions remained unfulfilled because;(Punjabi)
1.His father, being a Muslim does not allow him to marry with a Kafir girl.(Punjabi)
2.His father, being a landlord disliked a lowly job like touring circus.(Punjabi)
·So Rahim Khan had to marry a Muslim girl of his parent’s choice and carry on with farming.(Punjabi)
·After his marriage, he lives with his wife and two sons Nuru and Bundhu.(Punjabi)
·He beats his wife mercilessly.(Punjabi)
·Then he becomes cruel to the family, society and even the animals.(Punjabi)
·Even his two sons Nuru and Bundhu leave him because of his cruelties.(Punjabi)
Now look at this event:-

PES/ENG/XI/026
The time is evening. It starts drizzling. Rahim Khan lights the earthenware oil lamp. Takes some crumbs of bread and
places them in the nest made in the ceiling of his hut. He calls the little ones of sparrow as “O Nuru !O Bundu !” But the
sparrows did not come out. Anxious to find out what had happened to his friends, he peered into the nest and found them
scared and sitting huddled up within their feathers. He noticed that at the very spot where the nest lay the roof was
leaking. Rahim Khan takes a wooden ladder and went out in the pouring rain to repair the damage. By the time the work is
satisfactorily done he gets drenched and catches bad cold. In the morning he awakes with a high fever. When the villagers
did not see him going to the fields for several days they came to see him. When they peeped through the cracks of the
door, Rahim Khan was murmuring, “O Nuru! O Bundu! Who will feed you when I am gone?”(Punjabi)
The villagers shook their heads sympathetically, “poor fellow! He has gone mad, we will send for his
wife”
ANCHOR
What a touching story! I hope you must have enjoyed it. Can you write a few more lines about Rahim Khan? O.K
let us try to write.
(The text will appear on the screen while the anchor will read at the back.)
•The house in which he lives is gaunt and aloof. (Punjabi)
•Every one in the village is afraid of him. (Punjabi)
•He is a hard worker. When his wife left him, he managed himself at home as well as in the fields.(Punjabi)
•His love and sympathy with the family of the sparrows show that he has human soul in him.(Punjabi)
•It is the behavior of his parents and the society which is responsible to make him cruel.(Punjabi)
ANCHOR 4
Now you must have learnt the art of writing character sketch. I have given some hints only. You can add
more from the story and if you go through the text you will find much more about Rahim Khan. More
you will write the more you will get. While reading the text, you may find some words difficult to
understand. So let us have a look on the difficult words in this lesson.(PUNJABI)
(The glossary will appear in the screen and the anchor will give the meanings in English as well as in
Punjabi. To break the monotony, some pictures may be given to make the meanings clear.)
