Ligands
•Theneutralmoleculesorions(usuallyanions)whichareattached
withthecentralmetalionarecalledligands. OR
Incoordinationchemistry,aligand is
anionormolecule(functionalgroup)thatbindstoa
centralmetalatomtoformacoordinationcomplex.
Thebondingbetweenmetalandligandgenerallyinvolvesformal
donationofoneormoreoftheligand'selectronpairs.
Thenatureofmetal-ligandbondingcanrangefromcovalentto
ionic.
Furthermore,themetal-ligandbondordercanrangefromoneto
three.

Chelates

Chelateeffect(Stabilityofchelates)
•Chelatesaremorestablethansimilarnon-chelatedcomplexesofthesame
metalion.
•Greaterstabilityofchelatedcomplexmeansthattherewillbesmaller
dissociationofthechelatedcomplexintoitscomponentsinaparticular
solvent.
•Theenhancedstabilityconferredonachelateiscalledchelateeffect.
•Thegreaterstabilityofachelatedcomplexascomparedtothatofanon-
chelatedcomplexisduetotheincreaseinentropy.
