Slide Content

Chemical Basis of LOVE Proposed by Anthropologist HELEN FISHER of NEW JERSEY

Helen Fisher of New Jersey According to Fisher, attraction is based on physiology or certain hormones that persons who get attracted to other are often pick up with their noses Being attracted to another person may also means liking their genes that are perceived through their physical looks

Three stages of Falling in Love Lust Attraction Attachment

1. L ust Strong feeling of sexual desire It is driven by sex hormones (TESTOSTERONE and ESTROGEN) Hormones affects both sexes

2. Attraction Something interesting or enjoyable that people want to visit, see or do It is describes as “ lovestruck phase” It involves neurotransmitter in brain ( DOPAMINE, NE, SEROTONIN) This stage, person loses sleep and appetite over someone, swoons while day dreaming on this special person

3. Attachment Strong feelings of affection or loyalty for someone or something It is when couple in love decides to continue with relationships They enter stage where long-lasting commitment are exchanged and may lead to raising a family “oxytocin” – Special hormone released during childbirth to help breastfeeding and during orgasm “ vasopressin” – hormones which promotes long term relationships

PHEROMONES It is an odorless chemical found in urine, sweat and can only be detected through an organ as nose, and it is indication for person’s “immune systems”.

REASONS FOR ATTRACTION OR LIKING OTHERS

1. Transference Effect These are people that remind us of someone in the past who affected our sense of self and our behavior

2. PROPINQUITY EFFECT We often develop sense of familiarity with people who live close to us, work with us, or go to school with us, which leads us to liking them more People we are familiar with make us safe and secure.

3. SIMILARITY We often like people who we have similarities with like social class background, religious beliefs, age, education We often attracted to like- minded persons and with similar validation of innermost values and belief systems.

4. RECIPROCITY We like person who like us back According to research, it is stronger basis for liking another person than similarity “ mutual feeling”

5. PHYSICAL ATTRACTIVENESS It was believed that it is the major factor in liking someone “ first impression counts” It connotes positive mental health and reproductive fitness Usually relates to “average facial features” (beauty, higher cheekbones, thinner jaws, larger eyes) But with less attractive individuals may compensate by offering other qualities (wealth, status) but relationships built on this exchange do not last long.

6. Personality characteristics and traits People get attracted to two (2) characteristics This are emphatic persons/optimistic and socially competent persons EMPHATIC PERSONS- who exude warmth and sympathy OPTIMISTIC – maintains positive views Other traits : happy, cheerful, poised, outgoing, sexually warm and responsive. W omen: forego the physical attractiveness , warmth, trustworthiness, integrity, income potential and stability Men : put a premium over attractiveness and vitality
