Introduction Synonym : Kaasani,Wild Chicory,etc Biological Source : Dried leaves and roots of Chichorium intybus (Family: Asteraceae ) Geographical Sources : Europe, U.S., Canada, India. Chicory is an erect fairly woody perennial herb, around 1 m in height with a fleshy taproot of up to 75 cm in length and large basal leaves.
Chicory as Nutraceutical Nutraceutical: A food or part of food or nutrient, that provides health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of a disease . Chicory as Nutraceutical: Chicory intybus is grown for the production of inulin on an industrial scale. Chicory is used as a heart, digestive, stomach, and liver tonic, as well as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory agent. A petite stimulant. Paste of chicory leaves directly apply to the skin for swelling and inflammation.
Chicory as Nutraceutical Chicory is used for loss of appetite, upset stomach, constipation, liver and gallbladder disorders, cancer and rapid heartbeat. It is also used as a “tonic,” to increase urine production, to protect the liver, and to balance the stimulant effect of coffee . It is also used as antioxidant , cytoprotective , and antiproliferative activities. Anti parasitic activity.
Dose : There is no recent evidence to advise on dosages of chicory. Typical doses of the herb in traditional use were; Infusion 2-4 g single Powder 3 g
Side Effect Skin reactions. O ccupational allergy, asthma and severe whole body allergic reaction.
Conclusion: Chicory is an perennial herb, fleshy taproot of chicory has health benefit. As a nutraceutical chicory can used as folkfore medicine in heart, digestive, stomach, and liver tonic, as well as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory agent and apetite stimulant . Further more research on chicory may help to cure many diseases and disorders.
