What is Child Marriage? Child Marriage is defined as a marriage of a girl or boy before the age of 18 and refers to both formal marriages and informal unions in which children under the age of 18 live with a partner as if married.

Origin of Child Marriage A report by The New York Times states that according to sociologists Gujjar’s and similar groups trace the origin of child marriages in India to the Muslim invasions that began more than 1,000 years ago. Some others suggest child marriages were common everywhere in the world before the 19 th century . In India , there was a famous sociologist Raja Ram Mohan Roy who fought against Child Marriage .

Some Facts According to the UN , 37,000 girls under the age of 18 are married each day. 1 in 3 girls in the developing countries are married before 18; 1 in 9 are married before the age of 15. If present trends continue, more than 140 millions girls will be married before the age of 18 in the next decade. According to a UN report , India has second-highest number of child marriages.

Effects Isolated young girls, making them dependent and helpless . Deprives them of fundamental rights to education and safety. Affects reproductive health. Higher risk of poor health-complications of child-birth, HIV etc. Higher risk of facing domestic violence, sexual abuse , poverty . Next generation also gets stuck in same cycle.

Challenges to stop child Marriage Low public awareness of the illegal nature of child marriage and of the consequence of child marriage. Lack of trust in authorities among rural and ethnic minorities communities.

Now, a question arise:- What should we do to stop child marriage?

How to increase awareness The situation has become so pathetic that there is an immediate need to make people aware regarding child marriage. Children should be made aware of their human rights and must be taught to refuse these types of social evil. Media can play a important role in awareness like ‘ Balika Vadhu ’ serial. Social media can also play a key role.

PROHIBITION OF CHILD MARRIAGE ACT,2006 According to the Act, a child is defined as a person below the age of 18 years for females and 21 years for males. In this act a person can be imprisoned for two years.
