WELCOME to the presentation CHIPKO MOVEMENT - By Paarth Gupta

In the 1970 , an organized resistance to the destruction of forests spread throughout India and came to be known as the Chipko movement. The name of the movement comes from the word 'embrace', as the villagers hugged the trees, and prevented the contractors' from felling them. Not many people know that over the last few centuries many communities in India have helped save nature. One such is the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan. HISTORY:-

The original ’ Chipko movement’ was started around 260 years back in the early part of the 18 th  century in Rajasthan by this community. A large group of them from 84 villages led by a lady called Amrita Devi laid down their lives in an effort to protect the trees from being felled on the orders of the  King of Jodhpur. After thiS incident, the  maharaja   gave a strong royal decree preventing the cutting of trees in all Bishnoi villages. The Chipko movement of 1973 was one of the most famous among these. The first Chipko action took place spontaneously in April 1973 in the village of Mandal in the upper Alakananda valley and over the next five years spread to many districts of the Himalayas in Uttar Pradesh.

cHIPKO MOVEMENT:

WHY CHIPKO MOVEMENT:- The forests of India are a critical resource for the livelihood of rural peoples throughout the country. These forests have been increasingly felled for commerce and industry. There will be Soil Erosion and land slides. The Chipko movement was started to prevent the cutting of trees. Chipko Movement aimed at protection and conservation of trees and forests from being destroyed.

FOOT MARCH FOR CHIPKO MOVEMENT:

MEETING FOR CHIPKO MOVEMENT:

The Chipko Movement gained momentum under Sunderlal Bahuguna , an eco activist, who spent his whole life persuading and educating the villagers, to protest against the destruction of the forests and the Himalayan mountains by the government. It was he, who made appeal to the Prime Minister of India Mrs Indira Gandhi to ban the cutting of tress. He shouted the slogan 'ecology is the permanent economy'. The activist of the movement:-

Another main leader of the movement was Mr. Chandi Prasad Bhatt, who advocated the development of small scale local industries, which were based on the sustainable use of the forests resources for the local benefits. the rural women in India actively participated in the movement, who knows about deforestation and its future consequences. Some of the key women leaders who fought for the protection of forests, whom they call it their maternal mother were Gaura Devi, Sudesha Devi, Bachni Devi, Dev Suman , Mira Behn , Sarala Behn and Amrita Devi.

Sunderlal Bahuguna is an eco-activist from India. Sunderlal has spent his life working to educate Indian villagers, protesting against ecological destruction by the government and protecting the Himalayan Mountains. Mr. Bahuguna has had an active role within the Chipko and anti- Tehri Dam movements. Sunderlal has struggled for change in all of the above areas using peaceful resistance. He learned from Mohandas Gandhi to use peaceful means to bring major changes for his community. As a Ghandian peace worker he does not resort to violence to achieve the change he is working toward. “Embrace the trees and Save then from being felled The property of our hills, Save them from being looted” “Let us protect and plant the trees Go awaken the villages  And drive away the axeman ”   “ecology is permanent economy” Slogans of the movement:-

The villagers are so angered just because they were not getting the agricultural tools and it is a demand of them to use wood for making tools. They went into the forest and formed a circle the trees securing men from cutting them down. the extensive network of roads, which have built after the Indo-Chinese border conflict, made accessibility to this region easier. In the April 1973, in the village of Mandal in the upper Alaknanda valley, the first Chipko movement action took place. Actions of the chipko movement:-

The Chipko protests in Uttar Pradesh achieved a major victory in 1980 with a 15-year ban on green felling in the Himalayan forests of that state by order of Mrs Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. Since then, the movement has spread to many countries in the country. In addition to the 15-year ban in Uttar Pradesh, felling in the Western Ghats and the Vindhyas has stopped. it has also generated pressure for a natural resource policy that is more sensitive to peoples, needs and ecological requirements.
