According to study by National Youth Commission, 2 out of 5 Filipino teenagers aged 13-15 yrs. old smoke cigarettes as of March 2012 and 10 Filipinos die every hour because of Tabacco-related diseases (Ph Daily Inquirer 2019). National Youth Commission

Tobacco smoking and chewing is the second leading cause of death around the world. It is responsible for the death of 1 in 10 adults worldwide about 5 million deaths per year.

Each puff of cigarette, more than 4000 chemicals come into his contact. In studies, 43 of these chemicals are known carcinogen which a substance that can cause cancer. Nicotine, on the other hand is an addictive drug found in tobacco products which is a poisonous stimulant. Source: WHO

There are 3 smokes produced by cigarette smoking which are:

Mainstream smoke refers to the smoke that smoker directly inhales.

Sidestream smoke smoke that comes out of the lighted end of the cigarette. Also known as second-hand smoke which is more dangerous than mainstream smoke.

Third-hand smoke smoke left for a long time on sofa, beddings, pillow and other objects. Also called as Residual tobacco smoke which still contains harmful chemicals and carcinogens.

Effects of Cigarette Smoking

Immediately The lining of your nose and esophagus becomes red and irritated from the chemicals and smoke. You may start to cough. The good bacteria in your mouth die, leading to dry mouth and bad breath. The back of your mouth begins to itch.

20 minutes Nicotine enters your bloodstream, increasing your pulse and blood pressure. Your sense of smell is reduced. • Because nicotine is a stimulant, your brain will release feel-good chemicals or make you want to eat. When you don’t satisfy the urge, you will feel anxious and irritable

Eight to 48 hours ·The nicotine and carbon monoxide finally begin to leave your system — but, only if you haven’t smoked since your first puff. ·The excess mucus created to coat and protect your lungs will begin to drain. ·Nicotine not only is addictive, but it also impedes your sense of smell and taste. It takes two days for your body to flush the nicotine out and for your senses to return to normal.

Eight to 48 hours ·Hearing loss is a little-known side effect of smoking. When you smoke, the oxygen in your inner ear is depleted. ·Smoking makes it harder for your blood to circulate, so exercising and other physical activity can leave you winded.

For long-term the effects are: Increased Risk of Chronic Diseases: Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of many chronic diseases, including lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and various other respiratory conditions. These diseases can significantly reduce the quality of life and life expectancy

For long-term the effects are: Reproductive Health Issues: Smoking can cause fertility problems in both men and women. Pregnant women who smoke are at higher risk of complications such as miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, and birth defects.

For long-term the effects are: Cardiovascular Disease: Smoking damages the heart and blood vessels, leading to an increased risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. It accelerates the buildup of plaque in the arteries (atherosclerosis), which can lead to blockages and decreased blood flow to vital organs.

For long-term the effects are: Premature Aging: Smoking accelerates the aging process of the skin, leading to premature wrinkles, sagging, and a dull complexion. It can also cause yellowing of the teeth and fingers.

For long-term the effects are: Weakened Immune System: Smoking weakens the immune system, making smokers more susceptible to infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and influenza.
