A computer is an electronic device that processes data, performs operations, displays results, and stores information. It comprises both hardware (physical components) and software (programs and instructions). Core Components of a Computer The core components of a computer are responsible for its fundamental operations and can be categorized into five key units:

1. Input Unit- This unit consists of input devices that allow users to interact with the computer and provide data for processing. Common input devices include: - Keyboard: Used for typing text and entering commands.- Mouse: Used for pointing, clicking, and selecting items on the screen.- Scanner: Used to convert physical documents or images into digital formats.

- Microphone: Used to record audio input.- Webcam: Used to capture video input.- Joystick: Used for controlling games or other applications.- Touchscreen: Allows users to interact with the computer directly through touch gestures.

2. Central Processing Unit (CPU)- Often referred to as the “brain” of the computer, the CPU is responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations. It consists of three main components: - Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU): Performs arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and logical comparisons (greater than, less than, equal to).

- Control Unit (CU): Coordinates and controls data flow within the CPU, interprets instructions, and sends signals to other components.- Memory Registers: Temporary storage units within the CPU that hold data and instructions directly used by the processor.

3. Output Unit- This unit comprises output devices that display or present processed data to the user. Common output devices include: - Monitor: Displays visual information, such as text, images, and videos.- Printer: Produces hard copies of documents or images.- Speakers: Output audio signals.

- Plotter: Creates high-quality drawings and diagrams.- Projector: Projects images onto a larger screen.

4. Memory Unit- This unit serves as the primary storage location for data and instructions. It is divided into two main types: - Random Access Memory (RAM): Volatile memory that stores data and instructions currently being used by the computer. It is faster than secondary storage but loses its contents when the computer is turned off.

- Read Only Memory (ROM): Non-volatile memory that stores essential system programs and data that are not meant to be modified. It retains its contents even when the computer is turned off.

5. Storage Unit- This unit provides long-term storage for data and programs. It is non-volatile, meaning that data is preserved even when the computer is turned off. Common storage devices include: - Hard Disk Drive (HDD): A mechanical device that stores data on magnetic platters.

- Solid State Drive (SSD): A faster and more durable storage device that uses flash memory to store data.- Optical Drives: Devices that read and write data on CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray discs.- External Hard Drives: Portable storage devices that connect to the computer via USB or other interfaces.- Cloud Storage: Online storage services that allow users to store data remotely and access it from any device.
