Tenses tell us the time of the action .

There are three tenses ; Past, Present, and Future

Past Tense

Past tense is used for actions that were done in the past .

Present Tense

Present tense is used when the action is happening in the present.

Future Tense

Future tense is used when the action will happen.

Past Tense Verbs

Past tense is used when action has happened in the past.

Today we will learn about how verbs change when we use them in a different tense .

Saima play ed hockey yesterday .

I complet ed my homework last night.

Shahid Afridi finish ed the cricket match last week.

What is one common thing in all of the verbs?

First Rule The first rule of writing verbs in past tense is to add “- ed ” Formula: Verb + ‘ed’

Example: I watch (ed) a movie with my grandmother last night.

Second Rule When a consonant comes before a consonant in a verb, we simply add ‘ed’. Formula: Consonant + consonant = + ‘ed’

Example: Aslam ta( l )( k )- ed to me yesterday.

Third Rule When a consonant comes before a vowel in a verb, we simply remove the vowel and add ‘ed’ . Formula: Consonant + Vowel = (e) + (ed)

Example: My father sh( a)(v) ( e) +(ed) his head yesterday.

Changing “y” to “i” + “ed” There are two rules we follow when we change the verbs ending in ‘y’ to ‘i’ + ‘ed’

First Rule Removing the -’Y’ Formula: Consonant + Consonant = (y) + (ied)

Example: I car (r) (y) ied my school bag all day. When a consonant comes before a verb, we simply remove the ‘y’ and add ‘i + ed’.

Second Rule Changing “y” to “i” + “ed” Formula: Vowel + Consonant = +(ed)

Example: Ali pl (a)(y) + (ed) all day yesterday. When a vowel comes before a consonant in a verb, we simply add ‘ed’.
