PREHISTORIC
PERIOD
World History | Lesson 4

ESSENTIAL QUESTION
What were the
significant periods of
development during
the Prehistoric Period?

1.I can identify the significant
periods of development under
the prehistoric period.

2.I can describe the way of living
of the prehistoric people.

PREHISTORIC PERIOD
❏This period covers the millions of
years that took place before human
beings began to create written
records of their life and of the world
in which they lived.

❏Archaeology and similar fields of
study allow us to fill in the gaps and
piece together an image of what life
was like for our ancestors.

2.5 million B.C. to 3000 B.C.
(Paleolithic | Mesolithic | Neolithic)

STONE AGES
❏This period marks a period of
prehistory in which humans used
primitive stone tools.

❏Lasting roughly 2.5 million years,
the Stone Age ended around 5,000
years ago when humans began
working with metal and making
tools and weapons from bronze.

Paleolithic Period
2.5 million B.C. to 10,000 B.C.
(Old Stone Age)

PALEOLITHIC PERIOD
❏Humans used basic stone and bone
tools, as well as crude stone axes, for
hunting. They were also the first to
leave behind art.

❏They also carved small figurines from
stones, clay, bones, and antlers.

❏They lived in caves or simple huts
and were nomads, hunter and
gatherers.

PALEOLITHIC PERIOD
The Great Migration
❏Marked the end of the paleolithic
period, which resulted in the
extinction of many large mammals.

❏Most humans followed the animals
they hunted across the continents,
often moving toward wet climates
with lakes and fertile lands.

Mesolithic Period
10,000 B.C. to 8,000 B.C.
(Middle Stone Age)

MESOLITHIC PERIOD
❏Humans used small stone tools, now
also polished and sometimes crafted
with points and attached to antlers,
bone or wood to serve as spears and
arrows.

❏Agriculture was introduced during
this time which led to more
permanent settlements in villages.

Neolithic Period
8000 B.C. to 3,000 B.C.
(New Stone Age)

NEOLITHIC PERIOD
❏Humans used polished hand axes for
ploughing and tilling the land and
started to settle in the plains.

❏Advancements were made only in
tools but also in farming, home,
construction and art.

❏They switched from hunter/gatherer
mode to agriculture and food
production - agricultural revolution.

I can identify the significant
periods of development under
the prehistoric period.

Metal Ages
02
3000 B.C. to 600 B.C.
(Bronze Age | Iron Age)

METAL AGES
❏During this period, people started
using metals, like copper, tin,
bronze, and iron to make tools and
weapons.

❏They heated and shaped the metals
in hot furnaces.

❏With all these changes, people lives
became easier.

Iron Age
(1300 BC - 600 BC)

Bronze Age
3000 B.C. to 1300 B.C.

BRONZE AGE
❏Metalworking advances were made,
as bronze was discovered. Humans
used them for weapons and tools and
helped spark innovations including
the ox-drawn plow and the wheel.

❏Organized government, law and
warfare, as well as beginnings of
religion came into play during this
age.

Iron Age
1300 B.C. to 600 B.C.

IRON AGE
❏The discovery of ways to heat and
forge iron kicked off during this age.

❏Mass production of steel tools and
weapons.

❏Agriculture, art and religion became
more sophisticated, and writing
systems and written documentation
began to emerge, ushering in the
Early Historical Period.

I can identify the significant
periods of development under
the prehistoric period.

LESSON SUMMARY
STONE AGE
(2.5 million BC - 3000 BC)
Paleolithic Period Mesolithic Period Neolithic Period
Humans used basic stone and
bone tools for hunting.

They lived in caves or simple
huts, and were hunter and
gatherers. They were also the
first to leave behind art (cave
paintings).
Humans used small stone tools,
now also polished and
sometimes crafted with points
and attached to antlers.

They lived nomadically in
camps near rivers. Agriculture
was also introduced during this
time.
Humans used polished hand
axes for ploughing and tilling
the land, and started to settle in
the plains.

They switched from
hunter/gatherer mode to
agriculture and food
production.

METAL AGE
(3000 BC - 600 BC)
Bronze Age Iron Age
Metalworking advances were made, as bronze, a
copper and tin alloy, was discovered. Harder
metal replaced stone tools.

Advances in architecture and art. Invention of
potter’s wheel and textiles. More villages and
cities began to form.
Ways to heat and forge iron was discovered.
Metal was see as more precious than gold. Iron
was easier to manufacture than bronze.

Further advances in architecture. Early city
planning took place, and water systems put into
place.
LESSON SUMMARY

1.I can identify the significant
periods of development
under the prehistoric period.

2.I can describe the way of
living of the prehistoric
people.

Did we achieve our objectives?
