⦿ People began to believe that they have a common enemy and they
should rise up against this.
⦿ In May 1857, a massive rebellion started against the company’s very
presence in India.
⦿ The instant reason of mutiny was the use of Cartridges greased with
cow and pig fat. sepoys took it as blot on their religious sentiments
and news spread in all the regiments.
⦿ Sepoys mutinied in several places beginning from Meerut and a large
number of people from different sections of society rose up in
rebellion.

➢Mangal Pandey was executed for attacking his officers in Barrackpore.
➢On 29 March 1857, Mangal Pandey, a young soldier was hanged to death for
attacking his officers in Barrackpore and soldiers also rebelled against the use
of greased cartridges.
➢In response to this revolt, soldiers were captured and were put in jail.

➢The response of the other Indian soldiers in Meerut was quite
extraordinary, they marched to the jail to Meerut and released the
imprisoned sepoys.
➢The sepoys rode all night of 10 May to reach Delhi.
➢The regiments stationed in Delhi also rose up in rebellion and many
British officers were killed, arms and ammunition seized, buildings
set on fire.
➢The soldiers forcibly met Bahadur Shah Zafar and proclaimed him as
their leader.
➢Bahadur Shah accepted the rebellion’s plea & called regional rulers
to fight against British.

⦿ Regiment after Regiment mutinied and took off to join other troops at nodal
points like Delhi, Kanpur, and Lucknow.
⦿ One by one the rebel spread to entire northern India lead be different
leaders such as Nana Saheb of Kanpur, Birjis Qadr of Lucknow and his
mother Begum Hazrat Mahal, Rani Lakshmibai took as active part in
organizing the uprising against the British.
⦿ The whole scene frightened the British & they started changing notes of
fear.
⦿ The regional rulers allied with Mughal ruler as they thought that this way
they can restore their authority to rule which was not possible under British
administration.

Ans 1.The last Mughal emperor was Bahadur Shah Zafar.
2.He was sentenced to life imprisonment.
3.He and his wife Begum Zinat Mahal was sent to Prison in Rangoon in October 1858
4.Bahadur Shah Zafar died in the Rangoon jail in November 1862.

why sepoys refused to use them.

The important changes that were introduced by the British are as follows:
1.The British Parliament passed a new act in 1858 and transferred the powers of the East India
Company to the British crown for more responsible management of Indian affairs.
2.The Indian soldiers in the army were reduced and the number of European soldiers were
increased. It was decided that more soldiers would be recruited from the gurkhas,Sikhs and
pathans.
3.The British decided to respect the religious and social practices of the people in India
4.Policies were made to protect landlords and zamindars and give them security of rights over
their lands.
5.All ruling chiefs of the country were assured that their territory would never be taken away in
future.

Q6 What impact did Bahadur Shah Zafar support to the rebellion have
on the people and the ruling families?
Ans 1.After accepting the demand of sepoys, Bahadur Shah Zafar
wrote letters to all the chiefs and rulers of the country to come
forward to fight against the British.
2.Many smaller rulers were ruling on behalf of the Mughal ruler. They
felt that if Mughal emperor could rule again,they too would be able to
rule their own territories once more.
3.People got inspired and motivated. They got the courage ,hope and
confidence to act.
