Chapter 2 : Globes and Maps Earth  is the third planet from the Sun and our home planet.  Earth  revolves around the Sun, but its average distance from it is 149 million kilometers / 93 million miles. It is the largest terrestrial planet. The other terrestrial planets are Venus, Mars, and Mercury. The name  Earth  is at least 1.000 years old.

What is a map? A  map  is a representation or a drawing of the earth's surface or a part of it drawn on a flat surface according to a scale. Large maps can be put on wall are wall maps .

Maps are very useful & important to us, How: To understand roads and subways at new places. To calculate distance between two places. To know whether there are two or more paths to the same place and which is the shortest. We can get information about mountains, rivers, valleys or any other thing, which may come on the way, and we can prepare for that.

Maps are very useful & important to us, How: 5. We can get the information like height of the place or ups and downs on the road. 6. Boundaries of the land to define ownership. 7. Places like houses, farmhouses, mines can be shown on the map. 8. We can also mark crops, weather reports, direction of wind, rainfall on the maps. 9. Government needs the map to keep the record of the owners.

Compass A compass is an instrument to find directions on the surface of Earth. It is like a watch and has a magnetic needle which always points towards North. Once you know where North is, you can find rest of the directions. It is an important tool for sailors.
