Classes of seed Principle of seed technology
Types of pure Seed There are four classes of seed classified by the International Crop Improvement Association ( ICIA- established in 1924,) 1- Nuclear/ Breeder seed 2- Foundation seed 3- Registered seed 4- Certified seed
1- Nuclear/breeder seed:- Such seed are produced directly under the supervision of plant breeder and possessed all the required genetic characters. Such seed have high genetic value and are costly due to very little in quantity. It may be produced by breeder concerned institute when the breeder is not available. Breeder seed is used to produce foundation seed. In case of self pollinated species, mass selection may be regularly practice to retain the genetic purity of the variety. Nuclear seed have no tag colour and not required seed certifications and Breeder Seed have golden yellow colour and are required seed certification
2- Foundation seed:- Produce from breeder seed and FS itself and it is a source of all Certified seed classes either a directly or a through registered seed. It is also known as mother seed. Production of foundation seed is responsibility of national seed cooperation (NSC). It produced on government farm, at experiment station, agriculture University, or on cultivar ‘s field under stick supervision of research scientist and expart from NSC or SSC. It has specific genetic identity and purity. White tag denotes foundation seed.
3- Registered Seed: - Produce from FS and RS itself, it Is a parent of Certified seed and registered Seed. It has specific genetic identity and purity and is usually produce by progressive farmers under technical gradance and supervision from SSC. Mostly this step is escape and certified is produced directly from foundation seed. It is generally practice in India. Purple tag denotes registered Seed.
4- Certified seed:- Progeny of FS,RS and CS itself. It is specific genetic identity and purity. It is approved and certified by state seed certification agency, is usually produce by progressive farmers according to standard seed production practice. Blue tag denotes certified seed.
