By fritsch Veena kini S0163 Classification of Algae

ALGAE Algae are chlorophyll-bearing, simple, thalloid, autotrophic and largely aquatic (both fresh water and marine) organisms

F.E. Fritsch (1935, 1945) in his book “The Structure and Reproduction of the Algae” proposed a system of classification of algae. He treated algae giving rank of division and divided it into 11 classes. His classification of algae is mainly based upon characters of pigments, flagella and reserve food material. classification of algae

2 1 Chlorophyceae mainly occur in freshwater and terrestrial habitats chlorophyceae FLAGELLA -Motile cells ,equal flagella (isokont) PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and b,carotenes and xanthophyll RESERVE FOOD - Starch Example - chara and volvox

Xanthophyceae (yellow green algae) They are mostly freshwater few marine FLAGELLA - 2 unequal size (heterkont ) PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and e carotene and xanthophyll RESERVE FOOD -oil Example - vaucheria and tribonema

chrysophyceae (golden algae ) They are mostly freshwater few marine FLAGELLA - 2 equal or unequal size. PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and c beta carotene and phycochrysin RESERVE FOOD - leucosin, fats and chrysolaminarin Example - dinobryon and chrysophaera

Cryptophyceae (nearly brown) Both freshwater and marine FLAGELLA - biflagellate equal or unequal PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and c phycocyanin, phycoerythrin diatoxanthin. RESERVE FOOD - starch or oil Example - chroomonas ,cryptomonas

Dinophyceae (Dinoflagellates) Mostly marine and few freshwater FLAGELLA - biflagellate and equal PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and c beta carotene and xanthophyll, peridinin RESERVE FOOD - fats or starch Example - noctiluca and peridinium

Chloromonodineae (bright green) Freshwater FLAGELLA - biflagella PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and xanthophyll . RESERVE FOOD - fats and oil Example -gonyostomum

Bacillariophyceae (Diatoms) Cosmopolitan distribution FLAGELLA - single flagella PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and c beta carotene and fucoxanthin ,diatoxanthin. RESERVE FOOD - fats and volutin Example - navicula and pinnularia

Euglenineae (pure green) Freshwater FLAGELLA - single or biflagella PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and b beta carotene and xanthophyll RESERVE FOOD - polysaccharides and paramylen Example - Phacus and peranema

Phaeophyceae (brown algae) Marine water FLAGELLA - 2 motile gametes laterally attached flagella PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and c beta carotene and xanthophyll . RESERVE FOOD - mannitol and laminarin and oils Example -Ectocarpus and fucus

Rhodophyceae (Red algae) Mostly marine and rarely freshwater FLAGELLA - Absent PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and d , phycoerythrin and phycocyanin, carotenes. RESERVE FOOD - floridean starch Example - Coralline algae and laver

Myxophyceae (blue green algae) Freshwater FLAGELLA - Absent PIGMENT - chlorophyll a and d , phycoerythrin and phycocyanin, carotenes. RESERVE FOOD - Cyanophyceaen Starch Example -Oscillatoria and nostoc
