VITAMINS CLASSIFICATION
VITAMINS

Water soluble vitamins include
Vitamin C also called citric acid
Vitamin B1 (thiamine)
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Vitamin B3 (niacin)
Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)
Vitamin B9 (folic acid)
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin)
Cholin
Biotin.

ii) Fat soluble vitamins include
Vitamin A ( Retinol)
Vitamin D

D2 (Ergocalciferol) D3 (Cholicalciferol)

Vitamin E (Tocoferol)

Alpha Beta Gama
Vitamin K
K1 (Phylloquinone) K2 (Menoquinone)
K3 (Menodione)

Vitamin Classification
There are mainly two types of vitamins
classified based on their solubility. These
are water soluble and y not fat soluble
vitamins.
i) Water soluble vitamins
include:
 The contain C,H,O and may
contain S and Co
 They are not stored in body
 They are secreted into urine
 They not cause toxicity
 They cannot synthesized by
body
 They are not dietary essential
Vitamin C also called citric acid
Function: It is used as anti stress
Deficiency:no known deficiency in
animals.They can synthesize by digestive
microbes.

Vitamin B1 (thiamine)
Function: (1) They work as co-enzyme
(2)they help in metabolism of carbohydrates,
protein,fats
Deficiency:
Its deficiency cause beri-beri
It also cause polyneuritis and star-grazing in
poultry

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Function: It is involved in metabolism of
carbohydrates, protein, fats
Deficiency:(1) Its deficiency cause
dermatitis
(2) In poultry it causes curled-toe paralysis

Vitamin B3 (niacin)
It is also called nicotinamide
Function: It is involved in metabolism
Deficiency: Its deficiency cause pallegra
(Disorder of digestive system)

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)
Function: It is involved in metabolism
Deficiency: It deficiency cause dermatitis

Vitamin B9 (folic acid)
Function: It is involved in the synthesis of
methyl group
Deficiency: Its deficiency cause anaemia

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)
Function: It is involved in
metabolism
Deficiency: Its deficiency causes
epilepsy and convulsion(jerks)

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin)
Function: It is invoved in metabolism
Deficiency: Its deficiency cause slow
growth and less reproduction

Cholin
Function: It is involved in lipid metabolism
It is part of lecithin
Deficiency: Its deficiency cause fatty liver

Biotin.
Function: It is also invoved in metabolism
Deficiency: Its deficiency cause dermatitis

Fat soluble vitamins
include
 They contain
C,H,O
 They are stored in
the body
 They are secreted
into faeces
 They cause
toxicity
 They are not
synthesized by
body but
sometimes
synthesized
 They are dietary
essential
 General source for
fat soluble vitamin
are green pasture,
green fodder,
green leafy hay,
fish liver oil,
yellow corn
grains, sunlight

Vitamin A
 It is also called retinol
 Its requirement is expressed
in IU
Function:
It helps in maintaining eye sight

(2) It increases conception rate
Deficiency: Its deficiency cause night
blindness
(2) Its deficiency also causes poor
conception

Vitamin D
It is in two forms
D2: Ergocalciferol
It is mostly present in plants
D3: cholicalciferol
It is synthesized by animal body in
sunlight
Function:(1) It helps in bone
development
(2) It also help in to maintain mineral
balanced in the body
Deficiency: Its deficiency cause
osteomalcia and rickets

Vitamin E
It is also called tocoferol.
It is present in 3 forms alpha, beta ,
gama
Function
(1) It helps in immune system
(2) It also help in reproduction
Deficiency: Its deficiency cause white
muscle disease and
muscle dystrophy( weakness)
Vitamin K
It has three forms
K1: Phylloquinone
K2: Menoquinone
It is naturally present
K3: Menodione
It is artificially synthesized.
Function: It helps in blood clotting
Deficiency: Its deficiency cause
hemophilia and sweet clover disease.
