Mathe matics Grade 7 SETS: AN INTRODUCTION MICHAEL B. JORDAN

Preliminaries Prayer Energizer Attendance

Objectives 1. Describe and illustrate well-defined sets Subsets Universal set The null set 2. Use Venn Diagrams to represent sets and subsets

Activity Group the objects as you see fit and label each group

2 8 9

Trees Caps Numbers 2 8 9

Green Objects Red objects 2 8 9 Yellow Objects

The groups are called sets for as long as the objects in the group share a characteristic and are thus, well-defined.

Important Terms to Remember SET is a well-defined group of objects, called elements that share a common characteristic. Example: set of days in a week set of pink flowers set of grade seven learners

Important Terms to Remember The set F is a SUBSET of set A if all elements of F are also elements of A. Example: Set A = 1 2 3 4 5 Set F = 2 4 set F is a SUBSET of set A

Important Terms to Remember UNIVERSAL SET is the set that contains all objects under consideration.

Important Terms to Remember NULL SET is an empty set. The null set is a subset of any set. Example: set of green stars set of cars with no wheels

Important Terms to Remember CARDINALITY OF A SET is the number of elements contained in a set. Example: Set of Trees Cardinality is 3 Set of Days in a Week Cardinality is 7 Set A = 1 2 3 4 5 Cardinality is 5 Set of green stars Cardinality is 0

Draw 3 examples of well-defined sets. Name two subsets of the numbers from 1 to 10. List all the possible subsets of set B = {1, 2, 3, 4}
