EMBRYOLOGY
CLEFT LIP &
CLEFT PALATE
BY YOGANAND

DEVELOPMENT OF LIP
Lower lip is formed by fusion of Mandibular process of both sides
Upper lip is derived from medial nasal and Maxillary processes
Failure of fusion of medial nasal & maxillary process at 5 weeks GA in
one or both sides results in cleft lip

*Embryologically, the palate consists of two parts: primary
palate and secondary palate.
*The primary palate develops from the frontonasal process
*Secondary palate develops from the maxillary processes.
*Development of palate begins in the 6th week and
completes by the end of the 12th week. The palate
develops in two stages:
1. Development of primary palate
2. Development of secondary palate.
DEVELOPMENT OF PALATE
