INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN
The inspiration for this project stems from the desire to preserve and reinterpret Oromo
traditional design within a modern context.
KEY ELEMENTS OF INSPIRATION
Color Palette:
The Oromo traditional interiors often feature a warm and earthy color palette, inspired by the
natural landscapes of Oromia. Colors such as ochre, terracotta, deep greens, and vibrant reds are
used to evoke a sense of warmth and connection to nature. In the modern design, these colors are
incorporated through wall finishes, textiles, and decorative accents, providing a cohesive and
inviting atmosphere.

Natural Materials:
Traditional Oromo homes utilize locally sourced materials like wood, stone, and woven fibers.
These materials are celebrated for their durability and natural beauty. In the modern adaptation,
sustainable and eco-friendly materials are chosen to reflect this tradition, ensuring that the design is
both environmentally conscious and culturally respectful.
Patterns and Textures:
Intricate patterns and textures play a significant role in Oromo design, often seen in textiles,
pottery, and carvings. These patterns are not only decorative but also carry cultural significance. The
modern design incorporates these traditional motifs in subtle ways, such as through custom-made
rugs, cushions, and wall art, adding depth and character to the space.
Furniture and Layout:
The layout of traditional Oromo homes emphasizes communal living and interaction. Furniture
pieces are typically handcrafted and designed for comfort and functionality. In the modern design,
furniture is selected to reflect this ethos, with an emphasis on simplicity, craftsmanship, and comfort.
Open-plan layouts are used to encourage social interaction and create a sense of community within
the home.
