PRINCIPLE :-
Tubes are heated externally by
steam.
Preheated feed enters from the
bottom & liquid flows up through
heated tube.
Liquid near wall becomes vapor
&forms small bubbles .
Larger bubbles along with slug
flows up & strikes deflector.
Deflector throws the concentrate
down to the bottom .
CONSTRUCTION:-
● In this evaporator Heating units
consists of steam jacketed tubes.
●This tubes are held between 2 plates .
●An Entrainment separator (i.e Deflector )
is placed at the top of vapor head.
●Evaporator carries:- steam inlet,
Vent outlet,
Condensate outlet
●Feed inlet is from the bottom.
WORKING :-
● Preheated liquid feed
is introduced from bottom
●Height of liquid column is
maintained low i.e 0.6 to 1.2
●Heat is transferred to liquid through
wall of the tubes ( heated by steam).
● Liquid become vapour and form small
bubbles (fuse to form larger bubbles.
As more vapour formed the slug of
liquid blown up
the liquid spread as film over the walls
film rapidly vaporize
finally liquid concentrated vapour eject
Collected from bottom.
●Entrainment separator prevent
entrainment and break the foam .
● Vapour leaves from the top concentrate
is collected from the bottom.
ADVANTAGES :-
● Provide large area for heat transfer .
liquid flows at a high velocity -> heat transfer enhances.
● The time of contact is very short -> suitable
for heat sensitive substances.
● Suitable for foam forming liquids .
●It requires low hold up and small floor space.
Disadvantages :-
● It is expensive, construction is quite complicated.
●It is difficult to clean and maintain.
●Large head space is required.
● Not suitable for very viscous and salting liquids.
Uses :-
● Used for thermolabile substances
Insulin Liver
extract
Vitamins
● Used for
Clear liquids
Foaming liquids
Corrosive solutions
