Clinical Sport Psychology Dr. Sonia K apur

Clinical Sport Psychology Introduction:- Clinical sport psychology approach is driven by empirical findings in the clinical and sports sciences and follows the methodological traditions of behavioral psychology. C linical sport psychology and counseling professionally apply scientific knowledge and techniques to enhance individual daily functioning in various domains, like work, school, family and recreation.

It is a branch of professional attitude and style to improve human behaviour by applying scientific principles and methods derived from cognitive-affective, learning, social and developmental content area. It is best seen in the development of (CBT) i.e. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

Clinical sport psychology defined as the application of knowledge & methods from the various fields of psychology for the promotion & maintains of psychological & physical health, well-being, performance of individual, families & organization involved in sport. E.g.:- A clinical sport psychologist may treat the eating disorder by counseling and provide athletic performance enhancement. But he cannot be able to treat all disorder so he should know when to concern the other professional. DEFINITION

Scope & Style of practice Clinical sport psychology style includes mainly two critical elements : The first is the fundamental need for an evidence-based approach in which theory guides, research efforts, which then inform practice with empirically informed assessment and intervention strategies . It is a model by which performance concerns are not automatically views in the narrow terms initially presented by an athlete, rather in term of the entire content of athlete’s life.

Variables affecting athletes performance A no. of factors, both internal & external are interactively into understanding, predicting and enhancing athletic performance. No one activity responsible for all. As with all types of human performance, athletic performance is a complex activity that involves a no. of highly interconnected components:- Instrumental components:- It includes the athletic specific physical & seismometer skills and abilities.

Environment stimuli and performance demands:- Includes the competitive, interpersonal, situational and organizational circumstances issues and challenges that athlete experiences. Dispositional characteristics:- These includes intrapersonal variables such as coping styles and cognitive- affective schemas

Behavioral self regulation:- Includes cognitive, behavioral processes, affective & physiological that are foundation of goal directed behavior like performance. T hese 4 components align it is assumed that the result is the ideal performance. All the components are interrelated with each other.

Integrative Model of Athletic Performance (IMAP) This integrative model of athletic performance has been adapted from a general model of behavioural self regulation and from empirically supported models of human sexual performance and general social performance. This model involves three broad yet interactive phases :- Preparatory Phase: Involves internal & external demands and processes that direct readings for competitive behaviour .

Performance P hase: Involves intuitions of cognitive, affective and behavioural processes in actual athletic performance and skill execution. Post Performance Response Phase: Involves responses to external consequences and internal processes associated which athletic performance . Preparatory Phase:- Athlete Performance are the sport specific abilities that an athlete develops. Instrumental competencies are developed skills that becomes increasingly automatic over time. Clinical & cognitive psychology suggests that individual develop an inter-active pattern of self and other world repeated experiences. Schemas serve as a basis for understanding the world, controlling affective responses and maintaining interpersonal relatedness.

There are some example of schema’s Depending schema Failure schema Low frustration schema Self punishing schema Mistrust schema

The IAMP Self-Regulatory Performance schema/ Situational & Athletic performance Demands/ Athletic skills Self-focused attention during task engagement Discrepancy Adjustment Interpretation of either Threat challenge Positive affect & outcome expectations Attention focus on relevant performance cues Optimal autonomic arousal

Attentional focus on irrelevant internal cues/ loss of focus Dysfunctional athletic performance Task disengagement Complete behavioural disengagement Cognitive avoidance/ loss of focus / behavioural inhibition

Performance Phase:- Athletes performance requires fundamental understanding of self-regulatory process. Metacognitive process of self monitoring self evaluation and corrective acts is central to effective behavioural self regulation. This process occurs naturally and operates smart and automatically for individual which functional performance.

Events schemas Cognition Behavioural Responses Affect

Post Performance Response Phase:- The post performance phase typically follows three paths. The athlete either sustains involvement in athletic activity or competitive performance. Reengages in athletic following some brief dysfunctional period. Disengages from athletic covertly and overtly.
