CLINICAL STAGES OF RPD FABRICATION. PRESENTER. NASAGA SUSAN REG NO. 21/U/22165/PS MODERATOR. DR UMARU KIZITO
STEPS Diagnosis Treatment planning Pre-prosthetic mouth preparations. Diagnostic impressions and cast Designing the prosthesis Prosthetic mouth preparations Final impressions and cast Framework try in Denture try in Denture insertion.
D iagnosis. Determination of the nature of disease . Denotes the determination of the prosthetic necessity of the patient. Grouped in -personality evaluation -clinical evaluation -laboratory evaluation.
T reatment planning. Result of evaluating the diagnostic data Patients oral condition is evaluated along with diagnosis Develop a mental picture about type of the denture that will suit the patient. Rx plan outline- -Evaluating oral condition. - Type of denture. - Pre-prosthetic procedures -Equipment preferred to carry out various procedures -Materials to be used for the framework
d iagnostic impression and cast(lab) Alginate impression taken-sent to lab for casting.- cast made out of plaster. Diagnostic cast are mounted using a tentative jaw relation record The inter-arch space and occlusal contacts are evaluated using the mounted diagnostic cast. Cast is surveyed using a surveyor to demark soft tissue undercuts which are to be removed while carrying out pre-prosthetic procedures.
Pre prosthetic procedures -non prosthetic procedures done prior to the beginning of prosth etic rx to eliminate interference and or act as an adjunct to the success of the rx . Removal of pathosis Removal of undercuts Extraction Periodontal treatment Orthodontic treatment/alignment of abutment teeth. Conservative treatment Endodontic treatment
Making the primary impression and cast(lab). 6 weeks after any pre-prosthetic surgical procedure. Made with irreversible hydrocolloid –alginate, cause of economical reasons, elasticity and ease of manipulation. Cast made of plaster. Used to design the prosthesis.
Design ing the prosthesis. Choosing the type of components for the partial denture. Determining the location of various components. Determining the path of insertion and choosing the type of material for each component. Designing can be alone using an instrument called a surveyor.

Prosthetic mouth preparation. Rest seat preparation - on the occlusal surface of teeth to receive a rest. Guiding plane preparation- are parallel surfaces created on the proximal surfaces of abutment teeth along which certain parts of the partial denture will slide across during insertion and removal. They provide tenso - frictional, resistance/indirect retention to the proximal plate.
Final impression and cast. usually taken using alginate/impression material in a stock/custom tray . Small amount is smeared over the occlusal surface prior to impression making in order to record the rest seat and guide planes accurately,. Special techniques may be employed to record distal extensions. Master cast is for fabricating the prosthesis Refractory cast is for fabricating frame work.
Frame work try in. trying out the framework before fabricating the trial denture- any interference and fit is thoroughl y examined. indicator wax /pastes are used Occlusal rims are done in cases of full mouth rehabilitation, severe attrition, tipped teeth with loss of a proper line of occlusion. At this level jaw relation record is taken. Master cast is then articulated and teeth are selected
Denture try in For aesthetic and functional evaluation before processing. Error correction and modifications are done according to the requirement of the patient is completed.
Denture insertion. Inserted and evaluated. Premature occlusal contacts and minor errors are corrected. Post insertion instruments are given. Patient is recalled frequently to evaluate tissue response, obtain feedback and determine periodically the success of the denture.
