Clinical uses of rasa sindoora

Rasa Sindoora is an important Sagandha kalpana of Parada. The drug is fascinating both due to its method of preparation and its uses. This presentation aims at bringing into light the clinical uses of Rasa sindoora mentioned by Rasa tarangani.

2. DOSAGE For infant of 1 year of age- 1/16 of 1 ratti (7.8 mg) Up to 2 years of age- 1/7 of 1 ratti (17.8 mg) At 6 years of age- 1/3 of 1 ratti (41.6) 12 years of age- ½ of 1 ratt i (62.5) Above 12 years of age- 125 mg. 1 ratti (seed of Abrus precatorius )= 125 mg.

3. Properties of Rasa Sindoora It is like an lion for elephant like enormous disease Prameha (Diabetes and metabolic disorders). It destroys severe pain of any kind. Heals Bhagandara (fistula tracks) Controls fever and its complications It cures diseases related to malnutrition and consumption disorders ( Shosha ) One of the best aphrodisiac Cures anaemia, heals wounds, enhances digestive fire. Good for skin disorders ( Kustha ) It helps in controlling Vata disorders and act as nervine tonic.

4. Cont... Helps in easy evacuation of bowel, bladder and cures any disorder related to abdominal distension. It helps in removing excess of bile ( Pitta ) from body without causing purgation.

5. Usage of Rasa Sindoora according to diseases. Nava jwara (fever of recent origin)- along with juice of flowering Tulasi leaves ( Ocimum sanctum), Ardraka swarasa (ginger), Nagavalli swarasa (betel leaf). Jeerna jwara (fever of long duration)- along with decoction of Guduchi ( Tinospora cordfolia ), Parpataka ( Mollugo pentifolia ), and dhanyaka (coriander seeds). Prameha (Diabetes) - along with guduchi or with juice of raw rhizome of Haridra (Curcuma longifolia ). 2. along with Vanga bhasma and honey. Piles (Haemorrhoids)- along with decoction of Hareetaki ( Terminalia chebula ).

Pradara (disorders related to excess flow from vagina)- along with Ashoka ( Saraca indica ) Apasmara (Epilepsy) along with juice or powder of Vacha ( Acorus calamus ). 2. along with decoction of Bramhi ( Bacopa monnieri ), Vacha ( Acorus calamus ), Sankha pushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis ), Kustha ( Saussurea lappa ), Ela (Cardamom) in dose of 2 ratti (250 mg). Unmada (mental disorders of various kind)- juice of Kusmanda ( Benincasa hispida ). Asthma and other dyspnoea - it is used along with decoction of Vibhitaki ( Terminalia bellerica ) or fresh juice of Vasa ( Adhatoda vasica ).

7. Cont... Kamla (Jaundice)- along with decoction of Daruharidra ( Berberis aristata ). Pandu (Anaemia)- along with Lauha bhasma . Mutrakruccha ( dysuria )- with equal parts of Mishri (sugar candy), shilajeet ( Asphaltum punjabinum ), Ela seeds powder (Cardamom). Ajeerna (Indigestion)- along with honey and decoction of Musta ( Cyperus rotundus ). Colic pain – decoction of Triphala .

8. Cont... Moorcha (fainting)- along with Pippali churna (Piper longum ) and honey followed by sitz bath in cold water. Shotha ( Odema )- decoction of Punarnava ( Boerhavia diffusa ). Disorders pertaining to uterus - it is used along with Kakoli churna ( Roscea procera )and coconut oil. Bhagandara (fistula-in- ano )- decoction of Triphala and Vidanga ( Embelia ribes ).

Visphotaka (Boils)- in dose of 1 ratti along with Chaturjata churna and decoction of Guduchi ( Tinospora cordifolia ), Nimba ( Azadirachta indica ), Khadira (Acacia catechu), Indrayava (seeds of Holarrhena antidysenterica ). Gulma - decoction of Saunf (fennel seeds), Hareetaki or Yavani churna ( Trachyspermum ammi ) or Vida lavana . Shirashool (Headache)- along with Dasmoola decoction. Wounds of chronic nature - decoction of Bruhati root ( Solanum indicum ), Guduchi ( ( Tinospora cordifolia ), sugandhabala ( Pavonia Odorata ), and shunthi (dried ginger powder).

10. Cont... Purana aamvata (Rheumatoid arthritis)- along with decoction of Guduchi , Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus ), Pippali (Piper longum ), Hareetaki , Vacha and Shunthi . Aphrodisiac - along with powder of Shalmali root ( Salmalia   malabarica ) and drugs of Vidaryadi gana (mentioned in Susruta samhita ). Sukrakshaya ( Oligospermia )- along with Abhraka bhasma and Swarna bhasma . Night ejaculation- along with powders of Jatiphala ( Myristica fragrans ), Lavanga ( Syzygium aromaticum ), Karpoora ( Cinnamomum camphora ) and Ahiphena ( Papaver somniferum ).

11. Cont... Shirakampa (Head tremors)- along with decoction of Bala moola ( Sida cordifolia ). Chardi (vomiting)- along with honey and decoction of bhrit ela (Black cardamom). 2. along with honey, Trikatu , Dhanyaka (Coriander powder), Jeeraka (cumin seeds). 3. along with Jeeraka , Trikatu , Kantakari ( Solanum xanthocarpum ), Hareetaki , and Dhanyaka (Coriander). Madaatya (Alcoholism)- along with Hingu (Asafoetida), Ajwain ( Trachyspermum ammi ), Chavya (Piper retrofractum ), Dhanyaka (Coriander), and Sauvarchala lavana (black salt). Parinamashoola (pain due to duodenal ulcer)- along with Yavakshara (Mixture of Potassium salts)and Tankana (Borax)

12. Cont... Raktapradara (DUB)- along with decoction of Lodhra ( Symplocos Racemosa ) or Vasa kashaya ( Adhatoda vasica ) Basti kundala (disorder of urinary bladder)- along with Triphala kashaya or kanji along with saindhava lavana (rock salt). In Naveena jwar a and Pratishaya ( rhintis ) of children it is used along with Tulasi swarasa ( Ocimum sanctum). In Kasa and Swasa (cough and cold) of children along with Kantakari swarasa ( Solanum xanthocarpum ) .

13. Here usage of Rasa Sindoora along with various Sehapana and anupana (vehicles of drug intake )in various diseases is mentioned. Such other combinations can be made according to the yukti of Bhishaka .

14. Therapeuti c Importance of Rasa Sindoora Lo ng term use of Rasa Sindoora doesn’t causes any such complications that occur due to intake of Parada or other Non-sulphur containing combinations of Parada like Rasa Pushpa and Rasa karpoora .
