Bio: Coach Matthew L. Johnson, PES, CES, FNS

Coach Johnson has a diverse background of successful coaching
experience at the Collegiate, High school and Youth club levels as well as
extensive training in Sport Administration, Exercise Science and Sport
Psychology. His education includes a Master of Science from California
University of Pennsylvania in Exercise Science and Health Promotion with a
concentration on Sport Psychology as well as a Bachelor of Science in Sport
Administration from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. Johnson is also a
certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Performance
Enhancement Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Fitness Nutrition
Specialist.
Coach began his coaching career at Williamsport Area High School (1995-
2003) in Pennsylvania helping lead them to the PIAA Quad A State
Championship game in 1995 and winning the PIAA Quad A State Championship
1999. During his eight years with the program Johnson played an integral role in
player development and established the Williamsport Billies AAU Basketball
Club for out of season competition. Coach Johnson developed many All State
athletes and helped several student-athletes obtain athletic scholarships in
various sports. His basketball players have had tremendous success and include
All Big East players, Division 2 All Americans and NAIA National Champions.
A few former Billies players are still playing professional around the World.
Johnson left Williamsport High School in 2003 to help build a community
college program at the Pennsylvania College of Technology into a competitive
four year collegiate program. He helped the program bring in dynamic recruits
that earned All-Conference honors, achieve the best record in school history, and
secure NCAA Division 2 and 3 opponents to upgrade the program schedule
from the community college level.
In 2007, moved to work as an Assistant Coach alongside former NBA
great Hersey Hawkins at Estrella Foothills High School in Goodyear, Arizona.
His success on the East Coast followed him to the West Coast as he was able to
assist in Estrella Foothills winning the AIA 3A State Championship in 2008, 2009,
and 2010. Johnson also took part in the training and development of the State’s
all-time Leading Scorer.
He then took over as the Head Coach of the Estrella Foothills High School
Girls’ Basketball Team in 2011. In two of his first three seasons Johnson has
earned region or section Coach of the Year Honors, led his team to the best
record and first play-off win in program history. Coach Johnson has worked and
spoken at several camps and coaches clinics across the country. Most recently, he
has worked with Ganon Basketball to enhance his player development skills and
coached players seeking opportunities to advance their careers professionally
across the world, at the Global Basketball Summer League.

Philosophy of Life

Life is attitude
We create our reality through our perceptions, reactions to them, and our overall way of
being. I found a text which reflects perfectly what I believe about that. This is really what
I experiment with every day.

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is
more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money,
than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do.
It is more important than appearance, gift, or skill. It will make or break ...a person...a
home…a team…a company.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will
embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people
will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.

The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude. I am
convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And
so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes."

Leadership Skills
"My strengths and weaknesses as a leader"

My goal is to provide an accurate evaluation of my personal leadership skills that
are essential to making a positive impact upon an organization. The specific traits I
possess, that I will be concentrating on are bearing, courage, decisiveness, judgment,
dependability, initiative, unselfishness, endurance, enthusiasm, and maybe the most
important of all, loyalty.

Despite the fact that I am not a very extroverted person, I feel that I have excellent
bearing. When I do not have anything I feel is intelligent to say, I simply do not. But
when I am dealing with subjects that I have knowledge and experience in, I have been
able to gain respect of others through what I had to say or the points I make.

Courage is one of my stronger traits. I will stand up for what is right, basically
without fear and regardless of the circumstances. This quality has gained me trust, loyalty
and respect from many of my employers, co-workers, and athletes. I am the guy that will
always have your back, but someone who will speak-up when I feel you are wrong.
Personally, I feel doing things the right way is the most important ingredient to a
successful program.

Decisiveness is really about developing a system and administering it. It is
difficult for an inexperienced person to be decisive, I know my opinion, style and system
has been altered since I first started, coaching and organizing sporting events. But,
through my experiences, I have developed a decisive way of doing things which is bound
to my philosophy and this philosophy will be well-enforced.

I feel the courage and judgment trait can walk a thin line. You cannot be overly
courageous because what you may think are good intentions can turn into poor judgment.
I believe most people have to face adversity before they realize it is necessary to stop and
use their best judgment during even the most intense and spontaneous moments to be a
good leader.

Dependability is one of my core values. I have always been there for my
employers, co-workers and players through good times and bad. My former high school
players still call me for help on many issues. As an employee, “going well beyond my job
descriptions and doing whatever necessary to get the job done,” is how I was described
by the Williamsport Area High School Athletic Director, Sean McCann in his letter of
recommendation for me to the Pennsylvania College of Technology. This illustrates the
unselfish initiative I apply to programs I am involved with.

Endurance may be the most difficult skill to obtain. It is hard to be patient when
you want expectations met. What I like to do is envision the potential in an organization
or individual, set reasonable goals and work tirelessly to achieve them. The key part to
this is it will be done over time, setting an unrealistic timeline on goals can be
counterproductive. Creating an enthusiastic environment is of vital importance to me
within an athletic program as it makes it easier to endure the challenge to uphold exigent
goals and objectives over time.

Loyalty is the most important quality in my opinion. By taking such great pride in
being a part of an athletic program, I take every opportunity to promote and support it.
The advancement of the athletic program and its philosophy becomes the impetus of my
life.

Staff Leadership Strategy
"Supervision, Evaluation and Motivation of Employees"

As a staff supervisor it is very important to set goals as well as a plan to achieve
those goals using effective organizational and communication skills. It is a priority to
enforce the philosophy of the organization while taking responsibility for the department
and staff functions within the program. It is important to make clear to the staff; their job
descriptions, my expectations of them, and my role within the program.

Staff participation will be utilized to motivate the staff. One objective is to be
familiar with the staff, show interest in their opinion, and have a general concern for their
well-being. Routine meetings will be held to recognize and reward the staff for a good
job. Staff involvement in diverse functions of the organization builds trust, loyalty and
pride in the program.

The performance of the organization will be evaluated as a whole and by segments
such as departments, individual staff members and me. Evaluation of the organization is
necessary to identify its strengths and weaknesses. This information can then be used to
make adjustments for the betterment of the organization. It is imperative for me to
provide the staff with the appropriate resources, skills and knowledge to do their job
effectively.

Promotion of the organization's philosophy and accomplishments will be employed
to inspire the staff. It is crucial to command a general appreciation of the goals and
standards the organization has established. The overall goal is to create a positive
environment which leads the staff to believe they are a part of something special and
establish effective job performance.

Coaching Philosophy

The desire to succeed or excel beyond expected limitations is the foundation of a
program. Dedication to the sport, team and self is the first ingredient I look for in a player
and staff. The next key component is discipline; socially, academically and athletically.
The final piece to my successful program is development, in all phases of the game and
person. It is my belief that when this criterion is met, success will follow, not just in
athletics but in life as well.

Establishing the importance of education and demanding players to be students
first, athletes second is my goal. I want my players to have the same desire to excel in the
classroom as they have on the court. I expect them to be respectful to the school faculty
and/or staff. I will be active in assisting the school faculty and/or staff with any
difficulties they may face. I expect my players to attend class, on time routinely. They
must also adhere to school, conference and national association academic requirements
without exception. Athletics are important to me and I want to win games, but education
is their future and I put that before a game.

I value the fundamentals of the game of basketball, the team concept, and the
willingness to work hard to improve. I believe players need to be pushed, that coaches at
times must be their harshest critics, while other times are their biggest fan. I feel a coach
must support his players but never pamper them. Treat players fairly and let them know
their value to you and the team. Goal setting is important and only reasonable goals
should be set, but when they are achieved, don’t accept them as your limitation.

It is important to me that my teams carry themselves with class, poise and
confidence, even in the most difficult or stressful situations. Respect to officials,
opponents, coaches and each other is essential. Concentration on the game and task at
hand (the focused look on the court) is what I want to see from my players. I want them
to move on to the next play and not dwell on mistakes, always try to win the next play,
you can’t get back the past.

My system is designed to have a flow to the game so players can play the game
rather than think about the next play. It is a system that will utilize the entire floor and be
played at an up-tempo pace, but the ability to execute and control the ball will be
mastered. My players will develop a great understanding of the game of basketball and
how to read situations on the court. Instruction and explanation; of how and when to do
things on the court; is a point of emphasis when I teach the game. I want each player to
have a clear and concise understanding of what is expected of him and what his
responsibilities are on the floor. As they develop they should be aware of each other’s
duties as well.

I believe in supporting my fellow coaches and encourage my players to participate
in other school activities. A student-athlete should be as involved in the school
community as they possibly can, the more experiences, opportunities and relationships
they develop the better! They should have great pride in their school and community and
support all causes it is represented therein.

As you can see my coaching philosophy is not based on winning basketball games
but more so on academic and athletic effort. Developing true student-athletes, who
represent themselves, their school and their team to the best of their ability and do so with
class, integrity and pride is how I would mark the success of my coaching.

Why I am a good role model?

There are several qualities I possess that make me a good role model but I will list only a
few that I feel affect my status as a role model to others the most. First and most
important is I have the integrity to stand strong for my beliefs and convictions but also
respect and appreciate the opinions and values of others. Next, I am striving for self-
improvement to be the best person I can be. I recognize the knowledge of others and
challenge myself to gain a better understanding of tasks at hand.

The last quality I have that makes me a good role model is the self-discipline and
perseverance to maintain high standards for myself. This is achieved by having the
confidence to set goals and the diligence to obtain them. Reflecting on these qualities you
can see that the type of role model I reflect is one of self-pride and respect for others.
