Global annual production - 350000 metric tons
India and Sri Lanka produces 90% of total global production
Major coconut growing states in India : Kerala,
Tamil nadu, Karnataka, AP, Maharashtra, Goa, Orissa.
About 5.5 lakh persons get employment in the industry
- mostly part time
Exports from this industry are 70 crores annually.
Only 50% of total coir husk is used in coir industry Remaining used as
fuel in rural area and small industries

Objectives
Social objective
To improve the living conditions of those engaged
in this industry, especially the workers and manufacturers.
Economic objective
To help generate additional employment
opportunities, encourage production of quality products
acceptable to the export and domestic markets & facilitate
reasonable returns to producers and exporters.
Overall objective
To create in active collaboration with all
stakeholders, a self reliant environment for healthy and
sustainable growth of the industry.

Constitution of Board
According to Coir Industry Act 1953
Board shall consist of a Chairman and members ,not
more than 40,who are capable of representing
-Growers of Coconut.
-Manufacturers of coir products,husks.
-The governments of principal coconut
growing states.
-Any officer of central govt. appointed by the same.
Functions of the Board
To Promote by such measures as it thinks fit the
development, under the control of the Central Government,
of the Coir Industry.
Promoting exports of coir yarn and coir products and
carrying on propaganda for the same purpose
Regulating under the supervision of the Central Government
the production of husks, coir yarn and coir products .
Fixing grade standards and Regular inspection of coir fibre,
coir yarn and coir products
Functions
Collecting statistics from manufacturers, dealers on
any matter relating to the coir industry & publish the
collected statistics
Improving the marketing of coconut husk, coir fibre,
coir yarn and coir products in India
Preventing unfair competition
Promoting cooperative organisation among producers
Ensuring remunerative returns to producers
