Reading Strategies/ Reading Processes Basic Reading Skills

Objectives At the end of the week, learners should be able to: Understand better long and more complex specialized texts that you are likely to encounter in your studies; Recognise the text genre and structure; Employ a range of while-reading strategies to aid your comprehension of texts; Independently monitor your reading progress; Evaluate the quality of ideas in texts; Develop your knowledge of English to support your understanding of language in texts and; Apply a range of strategies to read more efficiently making the best use of your limited time.

Importance of Reading The more input, the more output. Input Reading Listening Produce Output Speaking Writing

Importance of Reading… Reading is the best way to improve your understanding of the language. And understanding is the first step to grasping the language. Reading can acquaint you with the subtlety and beauty of the language. Reading will open windows to the world—enrich your knowledge of the world, of cultures in other countries and of history.

3 R eading Processes Survey reading Serious reading Study reading

Survey reading Allows you to discover as quickly as possible, the main topic in the chapter and how the material is organized into sections and subsections; Helps you to find the materials and information that are relevant to your task as quickly as possible; Enables you to understand the topic more easily if you can see how the material you are reading fits into a context.

Skimming and Scanning Skimming To get a general sense; To get the main idea; To summarise the main ideas; To determine whether it is necessary to read an article in greater detail. Scanning You know why you are reading; To look for specific information or details; You do not read every word.

Serious reading To gain a deep understanding : * of the main points dealt within each section of the reading in the passage you have already surveyed and; * of how detailed examples and explanations support these main points.

Study reading To record information for learning; You need to learn to take concise, precise notes.

Reading Techniques Know what you need to get out of your reading . Choose the appropriate learning strategy . Have a planned reading schedule with realistic and attainable goals. plan must consist of organization, time management, an understanding of what should be learned, consistent review and recall to monitor comprehension, and a way to assess results. Read with a dictionary available. Create a study environment.

Questions Before you begin reading, * turn the subheadings into questions so that your mind is actively looking for answers rather than passively reading along.

Read Locate the main idea of each paragraph; Look for the supporting details: key words, small groups of words - make sure the details refer to the same main point; Write notes while reading.

Recite While reading take time to paraphrase what you read out loud. Assures that you comprehend what you are reading; Helps avoid plagiarizing if writing a research paper; Helps you remember the main idea and details or examples.

Review Y our notes and questions created for the chapter daily; T he highlighted areas of your text; Y our comments you made in the text as you read ; Recite the main points of each section of the chapter; Develop study aids like mnemonics to easily remember things you have read.

Conclusion Think critically by applying your current knowledge to new situations; You can incorporate critical thinking skills into your academic life by evaluating different perspectives, asking questions and explaining your answers. Be an active learner by asking questions, getting involved, and taking responsibility. Read actively by summarising in your own words and looking for signal words to help you better understand main points and details. Improve your writing by prewriting, drafting and revising. _____
