HOW CAN WE PROMOTE A SAFER AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT?

ELEMENTS OF HAZING -Physical or psychological suffering, harm or injury -Inflicted on a recruit, neophyte, or member -As part of an initiation rite or practice made as a prerequisite for admission or continuing membership -In a fraternity, sorority or organization
NOT HAZING Does not inflict physical or psychological suffering Does not adversely affect the health Has a valid and legitimate purpose How to know if an activity is hazing
Types of Hazing
Physical Hazing Involves physical abuse, forced physical activities, or exposure to dangerous situations.
Emotional/Psychological Hazing Targets an individual’s emotions, self-esteem, or sense of belonging.

Importance of Addressing Hazing and Bullying
Why is there a need to address hazing? -Too many have died because of the practice -There is no way to do it “safely” -The risks outweigh any benefit
