COMBATING HAZING AND BULLYING: CREATING A SAFER ENVIRONMENT

HOW CAN WE PROMOTE A SAFER AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT?

HAZING The act of subjecting newcomers or individuals to humiliating or abusive rituals.

ELEMENTS OF HAZING -Physical or psychological suffering, harm or injury -Inflicted on a recruit, neophyte, or member -As part of an initiation rite or practice made as a prerequisite for admission or continuing membership -In a fraternity, sorority or organization

NOT HAZING Does not inflict physical or psychological suffering Does not adversely affect the health Has a valid and legitimate purpose How to know if an activity is hazing

Types of Hazing

Physical Hazing Involves physical abuse, forced physical activities, or exposure to dangerous situations.

Emotional/Psychological Hazing Targets an individual’s emotions, self-esteem, or sense of belonging.

Sexual Hazing Involves unwanted sexual behavior or harassment.

Importance of Addressing Hazing and Bullying

Why is there a need to address hazing? -Too many have died because of the practice -There is no way to do it “safely” -The risks outweigh any benefit

Bullying Repeated aggressive behavior with an intention to harm someone physically or emotionally.

Types of Bullying

Physical Bullying Involves hitting, pushing, or causing physical harm.

Verbal Bullying Includes name-calling, insults, or offensive language.

Social Bullying  is when a person tries to hurt another person's relationships or reputation. This harms the targeted person's mental health because it affects their sense of belonging.
