SCRIPTURE TO PRAY OVER
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us
anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us
long ago.

Colossians 3: 23 says, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you
are working for the LORD rather than for people.”

Romans 12:10 Calls believers to “learn to know God’s will for you.

1 Corinthians 15: 58 Calls us to be “strong and courageous. Always work
enthusiastically for the LORD, because you know that nothing you do for
the LORD is ever useless.”

And Proverbs 16: 3 says “Commit your actions to the LORD, and your
plans will succeed.”

We believe that God has given each one of us certain talents and
strengths for a career that will honor Him. As we stand in awe of The
One who created the universe, we acknowledge that He created us
for a special purpose, and our purpose can be worked out in our
career. Therefore, my career is an honor, privilege, and
responsibility.

The STAR Career Workbook
The STAR Career Workbook is new
and last updated in January, 2019.

tough challenges of Career
Change

created you for a special purpose too. Your

career, and in doing so, your career is an
honor, privilege, and responsibility.

What is this STAR-thing all about?
Whether you are approaching a career change by your own choice, or you
have been thrust into this process, you must decide if you will approach it
like a victim, a robot, or a STAR.
This program will help you prepare your message, your marketing and your
interviewing with proven strategies that highlight your success and promote
you as a winner!
The STAR job search method is focused on networking within organizations
where your passion, strengths and financial needs can intersect. The focus
is on establishing your name, your connections and then your value to that
organization… before they decide to fill a new position.
Other career programs may use the STAR acronym as it relates to your
interview technique, but in mine, the “T” stands for “Trials.” In your STAR
stories, you will be asked to identify the trials (problem, challenge or issue)
which you had to overcome to succeed in each goal. This is an important
feature to demonstrate motivation.
I use the S-T-A-R acronym to help you remember and use your key
accomplishment stories in your introductions, resume, cover letters and
interviews; and I use the S-T-A-R acronym to help you plan your career
networking meetings. You will see the STAR branding throughout my
workbook and my recruiting company. It’s how I “stay on my message.”

Are you a STAR?
Strategic: Do you have a plan for your career? Do
you understand your long-term and short-term
mission, vision, values and objectives?
Trial-Tested Talent: Do you truly understand all
of your talents? Have you done the necessary
homework to document your successes into concise
and impactful stories that illustrate the trials you have
overcome?
Available: Are you actively engaged in networking,
organizing, branding and engaging in the career
communities where you will find your next role?
Resource: How will you become a true resource for
your next employer? Have you done the research on
the challenges they face, the problems you need to
solve when you join them? What is the ROI (Return
on Investment) if a specific employer hires you?

STARs don’t just
apply for jobs
The Employer with a job
opening is a big black hole.
You, and everyone else, are on
the outside, with no insight to
the people, processes and
policies that get things done
in this organization.

STARs Network for
New Opportunities
This is done through careful
and strategic networking,
finding contacts within your
target employers at various
levels of authority, and
leveraging meetings,
conversations and
introductions until you are
sitting in front of a hiring
manager, interviewing for a
real, open position.
You can also use
this approach as a
part of your efforts
to apply for
existing job
openings

STARs Have
INTERNAL
Motivation!
3 commonalities in High
Performers:
1.Skill: I am GREAT at doing this
(what are you GREAT at?)
2.Attitude: I CAN figure out a
way to achieve this (what
have you overcome before?)
3.Passion: I LOVE doing this.
(does your passion show, or
are you still carrying
“baggage”)
How Achievement comes
about:
1.KNOW you can do it
2.Overcome all obstacles
3.Learn from your failures
4.Find solutions to problems that
matter
External Locus
of Control
Internal
Locus of
Control
I Cannot
I CAN!
It is my
responsibility
It’s “their”
fault.
OWNER
VICTIM

STARs Know Their Strengths & Talents
ONE: Think of a yearning; the things you look
forward to working on or that draw you back
each day
TWO: Practicing strengths feels good! Think of
the things you do at work that consistently bring
you satisfaction.
THREE: If you catch on quickly to something this
is a talent. Think of things you pick up very
quickly at work.
FOUR: Think of times you have been
complimented on your excellence, when
someone said, “perfect, or well-done.”
FIVE: Think of times when you “lost yourself” in
your work, when the effort was effortless and the
success was sustainable.
A strength or talent is a
pattern of behavior,
thoughts and feelings that
produces a high degree of
satisfaction and pride;
generates both physical
and/or financial reward; and
presents measurable
progress toward excellence.

Basically, these are the
things you do well!

A STAR will find out what
she does well, and look for
ways to do more.

MOVING
FORWARD
STATEMENT

Be ready for the question!
“Why did you leave your last job?”
•It may include some brief information about your
previous position and employer, and especially your
role there (so long as it corresponds with your career
pursuit), but it should include “moving forward”
language to indicate where you are heading.

•You will also pull in your Career Vision, your core values
and your key strengths.

•Your Moving Forward Statement
(sometimes referred to as an “Exit
Statement”) is a brief statement about
why you are making a career transition.

How is it Used?
•Casual Conversations: at happy hours, professional meetings,
and family gatherings, as you are discussing your plans, and
getting buy-in from your support network.
•Often, this is the first question a recruiter will ask you on the
phone (“Why are you looking?”).
•Networking Meetings: letting
them know your target roles in
their companies, or places where
they can refer you.

“fast-growing” or “B2B”) organization, where I can offer my expertise in
__________________________ and _______________________________ (name
your top 2 STRENGTHS). I am leaving (or looking to leave) my current employer
due to ___________________________________________ (keep it simple, like “a
reduction in force due to a recent merger.”)

PROFESSIONAL INTRODUCTION
“The Elevator Pitch”

Be ready for the ride!
•Your Professional Introduction is a key tool in
your communication strategy.
•It is often referred to as a positioning statement
or an elevator speech.
•Picture yourself stepping onto an elevator, alone,
with the CEO of one of your target employers.
•What will you say?

How else is the Elevator Pitch
Used?
•In Your Resume: incorporated into your
Professional Summary / Overview at the top
of your resume.
•Networking Meetings: letting your network
know your target roles in their companies, or
places where they can refer you.
•Casual Conversations: at happy hours, professional meetings,
and family gatherings, as you are discussing your plans and
getting buy-in from your support network.
•Interviewing: rehearsed, so that you stay on message and are
clear about your objectives.

Online Pitch Delivery
•When you are meeting 1x1 with a
networking contact online, over a video
conference, or even on a phone call, what
should you keep in mind?
–Treat it like a mini-interview. Dress
smart. Prepare.
–Choose your setting / background
wisely.
–Be prepared to go further than just
your introduction

•What about when you are attending a group networking meeting,
online?
•It can be difficult to get attention – even to get a word in. Timing
is critical, but don’t bow out!

PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVE
“If you don’t know where you want to go, you probably won’t get there”

Be ready with your map!
•Your Professional Objective is an internal tool that
you will use in identifying your goals, and in
communicating those goals with your network.
•It is not recommended for
your resume. Instead, you
will use your Professional
Introduction at the top of
your resume

IDENTIFYING YOUR KEY
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The STAR Method of

The “T” is for
•Just as a great novel or movie has a crisis, a
great success story has a challenge.
•Characters with depth, and stories with heart,
involve trials and challenges.
•Business leaders got where they are by using
their resources to overcome these trials.
•They want to know how you’ve overcome
adversity.

The StarHR twist on the STAR Method
Results: describe the results you achieved which helped the
company’s bottom line using Hard Numbers: i.e. dollars,
percentages, time, headcount, etc.
Situation: describe the job you were in and
your responsibility
Trial: describe a barrier or difficulty you faced
Actions: describe the action you took to
address the trial.

How is it Used?
Key: Relevance
•STAR stories are used when they most directly connect to
the business, needs, issues, or industry of the listener or
target.
•In a happy hour, you would discuss STAR stories that relate
to the companies you want people to introduce you to.
•In a networking call, you would relate a story that grabs
attention of the person you are calling, which would be
relevant to his/her industry and business needs.
•In an interview, you would use a STAR story that is relevant
to the industry and business needs of your host, and which
most closely answers the question of the interviewer.

STAR Worksheets
The key components of the STAR story, for the resume, are the Action
and Results. “Boil down” each STAR story into a 2 line bullet point
focusing on these elements. See examples in the STAR Career Workbook.

•STARS are Strategic, Trial-Tested, Available, and deliver Results to their
employers.
•STARS don’t just apply to jobs, they Network towards them.
•STARS have strong Internal Motivation.
•STARS Know their Talents and Strengths.
•STARS have more than just an elevator pitch, they have a full Marketing
Communications Package:
–All of these communication tools have a consistent message (and re-use much of
the same content)
–Your “exit statement” is about “moving forward”.
–Your elevator pitch is your Professional Introduction. Rehearse and repeat!
–Your professional objective is your “map”. It is mostly an internal tool, at the
ready when asked for.
–Your STAR accomplishment stories create the impact on your resume, drive the
direction of your interviews, and reveal the value you bring to the company.
