Commercialization of Agriculture Presented by : Group 5

Introduction Commercialization of agriculture is a phenomenon where agriculture is governed by commercial consideration i.e. certain specialised crops began to be grown not for consumption in village but for sale in national and even in international market. Commercialization of agriculture in India began during the British rule. It was prominent around 1860 ADs Commercialization happened but not to feed the industries of India but it was done primarily to feed the british industries, eg . Commercialization of cotton happned in India to provide raw and good quality cotton to cotton industry of Britain and same with the Indigo

How commercialization of Agriculture Happened ? By the direct and indirect policies and activities of Britishers . Ryotwari Settlement made the agricultural land a freely exchangeable commodity. Crops like jute, sugarcane, tobacco, tea, coffee, rubber etc ..had a high demand in the market that time and thus the intensive cultivation for these crops started for markets. Commercialization was a forced and artificial process for the majority of Indians, those farmers had to grow crops had to pay revenue to the British government.

What is the impact of commercialization of Agriculture? It has acted as a catalyst in increasing agricultural productivity but at the same time only rich farmers are benefited and this in turn added inequalities of income in the rural society. Commercialization of Indian agriculture also partially benefitted I ndian traders and money lenders who made huge efforts at the time of Britishers . This has caused several famines in India as food grains gets substituted with non food grain crops at that time. Regional specialization of crop production based on soil and climatic condition was the outcome of commercialization
