Topic common carotid artery There are two common carotid artery in our body. Right common carotid artery and left common carotid artery. Right common carotid artery is the branch of Brachiceocephalic trunk .It begin in the neck behind the right sternoclavicular joint. Left common carotid artery is the branch of Arch of Aorta. it begin in the thorax in the front of trachea. It ascends to the back of left sternoclavicular joint and enter the neck.
Root for Right and Left common carotid artery
Course of common carotid artery In the neck both Left and right common carotid artery have a similar course. Each artery run upward within the carotid sheath, under cover of anterior border of sternocleidomastoid muscle. It lies in front of the lower four cervical transverse processes. At the level of upper border of thyroid cartilage, the artery end by dividing into the external and internal carotid artery.
Course of common carotid artery
Carotid sheath
Relations of carotid arteries. Anteriorly : the common carotid artery is crossed by superior belly of omohyoid at the level of cricoid cartilage. Below the omohyoid artery is deeply situated and is covered by: A: the sternocleidomastoid muscle B:the anterior jugular vein C: the sternohyoid muscle D:the sternothyroid and middle thyroid vein.
Anterior relation
Posterior relations Posteriorly : . Transverse process of vertebrae C4_C8,and muscle attach to their anterior tubercle (Longus capitis and colli and scalenius anterior) The anterior thyroid artery cross medially at the level of cricoid cartilage. Vertebral artery. Thoracic duct on the left side.
Carotid sinus Syndrome The carotid sinus is richly supplied by nerves. In some person the sinus may be hypersensitive. In such person sudden rotation of head may cause slowing of heart. This condition is called carotid sinus Syndrome . The supraventricular tachycardia may be controlled by carotid sinus massage, due to inhibitory effect of vagus nerve on heart. The necktie should not be tied tightly,as it may be compress both the internal carotid arteries, supplying the brain.
