Common Household Colloids and Their Uses.

To Know In this lesson, you will identify the common household colloids and their uses. Colloids  have very important application in our daily life starting from food products to the medicines to industries. After going through this module, you are expected to: decide whether the substances are colloids or not. identify common household colloids. describe the uses of household colloids.

T ell if the following mixtures are colloids or not. Put a check (  ) if the mixture is a colloid and cross (  ) if it is NOT. Start Here _____ a glass of milk _____ a bottle of antibiotics _____ cheese _____ flour dissolved in a glass of water _____ orange juice _____ mayonnaise _____ paint _____ sugar dissolved in a glass of water _____ honey _____ soft drinks

Word Hunt Arrange each set of letters to form the correct word. Use the clues as your guide. ____________________ 1. L O I C L D O - a mixture in which the particles of a substance are evenly distributed throughout the substance   ____________________ 2. A M O F S - colloids which consist of gas dispersed liquid foams or solid foams   ____________________ 3. E S R E P S I D - result of spreading substances in a mixture   ____________________ 4. S L U M E N I O S - is a mixture of two or more liquids that are normally immiscible (unmixable or unblendable )   ____________________ 5. E R O S A L S O - is a suspension of fine solid particles or liquid droplets in air or another gas

Look Up Colloids  are common in everyday life. Some examples include whipped cream, mayonnaise, milk, butter, gelatin, jelly, muddy water, plaster, colored glass, and paper. Every colloid consists of two parts: colloidal particles and the dispersing medium. Colloid is a special kind of mixture that contains very tiny particles that cannot be seen by the unaided eye. The tiny particles do not settle down. Instead, they move rapidly and collide with or bump each other. This motion of the tiny particles is called Brownian motion. In adding a powdered milk to a glass of warm water, you can form a cloudy mixture but the milk particles do not settle down. The milk that you drink everyday is called colloid. There are different types of colloids depending on the dispersed phase and the dispersed medium that can be found at home. These are the common names of colloids at home solid sols, gels, solid foams, liquid sols, emulsions, liquid foams, and aerosols.

When the dispersed phase and the dispersed medium are both solids. Colloids are called solid sols . Examples of solid sols are gemstones, pearls, and other colored glass like stained glass Gems are precious stones made as pendants of necklaces and other pieces of jewelry. Pearls are also made into earrings and necklaces. Colored glasses are commonly used as decorations in walls or ceilings of buildings and houses. Gems, pearls, and colored glasses are solid sols.

If solids are dispersed in liquid medium, colloids called liquid sols are formed. Paints have both protective and decorative functions. Pigmented inks, and glues are can be used at home, in offices and printing press. Shampoo, liquid body soap, and body lotion used for taking a bath. Fabric conditioner, and liquid detergent used for doing laundry. Paints Pigmented ink shampoo fabric conditioner

Aerosols are suspensions of liquid or solid particles in a gas. Clouds and fog are natural aerosols, which consist of water droplets dispersed in air. Dusty air and smoke are aerosols, too. Insecticides are used in farming. Artificial aerosols are not environment-friendly like perfume spray, and spray paint are artificial aerosols that can be found at home. These products contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which act as propellants. Experts say the CFCs, destroy the ozone layer, the layer that protects the earth from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. insecticides perfume spray spray paint

Gels are colloids which consist of liquid dispersed in solid. Your favorite gelatin, jellies, and jam desserts are gel. Shoe polish is also a kind of gel. Silica gel is placed in small packages in packets of medicines and vitamin pills to keep them dry. silica gels shoe polish jellies

An emulsion is a liquid dispersed in either a liquid or solid. Examples of emulsions are milk, butter, mayonnaise as ingredients of your food. Cod liver oil is a type of fish oil supplement which are linked to many health benefits. Most ointments and creams used in medicines and cosmetics. mayonnaise milk ointmets

Foams are colloids which consist of gas dispersed in liquid ( liquid foams ) or solid ( solid foams ). Whipped cream, froth on a glass on a beer, and soap lather are liquid foams. Styrofoam that are used in packaging material is an example of solid foams. Icing on a cake are solid foams also. whipped cream froth on coffee milk styrofoam

Used for salad dressing __________ 4. Ideal for sandwiches __________ 5. Prevents metals from rusting paint cheese butter mayonnaise whipped cream toothpaste

Activity 2: Write at least one example of common household colloids in each type and give their uses. Common Household Colloids Aerosols Emulsions Foams Gel Sols

Move On Your teacher in Home Economics tasks you to produce mixtures that you can sell during the food sale on the school's forthcoming Foundation Day. Prepare a menu for the event wherein your menu should include mixtures suited for hot summer days, such as fruit salad, buko pandan , halo-halo, and fruit shake. Then, List down the ingredients needed to prepare each mixture in the menu. Choose one mixture from your menu and then demonstrate to the class how the mixture is prepared. As you demonstrate, name the different ingredients that you mixed to produce your preferred mixture.

Speed Up 1. Which description best describes colloids? a. Size of the substance in the dispersed phase is between those in a solution and a suspension. b. Mixtures of two or more substances than can be easily separated c. Formed by mixing different kinds of solutions d. Have molecules that are big enough to settle at the bottom A. Describe the appearance and uses of the colloids. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

2. Which of the following is the best description of colloids? a. Sticky, creamy substance b. Clear, pure substance c. Dark, black substance d. Clear, flawless substance 3. The following colloids are used for food preparation except ______. a. gelatin b. silica gel c. milk d. whipped cream

4. Which colloid has both protective and decorative function? a. ink b. insecticide spray c. paint d. creams   5. The following are emulsions EXCEPT ________. a. butter b. facial cream c. mayonnaise d. soap lather

B. Read the paragraph and do the activity below. You and your mother brought the following items from the supermarket: mayonnaise, butter, red sugar, milk, oil, salt, detergent powder, shampoo, canned goods, dishwashing liquid, toothpaste, vinegar, soy sauce, olive oil, and ketchup. Select five (5) items that are colloids and describe its uses. Write your answers on the table below: Colloid Items Uses

Sum Up 1. A colloid is a special kind of mixture that contains very tiny particles that cannot be seen by the unaided eye. It is a mixture of a dispersed phase (the solute in a solution) and a dispersed medium (the solvent in a solution). 2. There are different types of colloids depending on the dispersed phase and the dispersed medium. These are the solid sols, gels, solid foams, liquid sols, emulsion, liquid foams, and aerosols. 3. There are common household colloids that are useful in our every day lives. People use colloids in different ways. Colloids such as milk, butter, gelatin, jelly, and whipped cream become ingredients of the food you eat.

4. Some colloids can be used as jewelries or house decorations such as gems, pearls, and colored glasses. 5. Styrofoam can be used as packaging material. Pigmented inks and glues can be used for printing and other arts and crafts. Paints can be used both for protective and decorative functions.   6. Others are used in medicines, cosmetics, and for personal hygiene.   Insecticides can be used for farming.
