Let’s read the dialogues!

Who are the persons involved in the first dialogue? In the second dialogue? In the third dialogue? Intimate – very close, private, and personal Casual – relaxed and unconcerned, less formal Consultative – giving advice or recommendation Consultative Casual Intimate

the form of language that the speaker uses which is characterized by the degree of formality. Communicative Style

INTIMATE STYLE used in conversations between people who are very close and know each other quite well because they have maximum shared background information like couples, family, and best friends. Examples: sharing of secrets between close friends, telling your problems to your parents

CASUAL STYLE used in conversation between friends and peers who have something to share and have shared background information but don’t have close relations. Examples: everyday conversation with classmates or friends, talking to your friend via messenger

CONSULTATIVE STYLE used in semi-formal communication where sentences tend to be shorter and spontaneous. This is a normal style of speaking to strangers or persons who are neither acquaintances nor friends nor relatives Examples: doctor-patient, lawyer-client, student-teacher, coach-athlete

Intimate? Casual? Consultative?

In the intimate style, we share our hearts with our close friends, our family, and our lovers. We use words of endearment.   In the casual style, we chat and play with our friends, our classmates and our peers. Everything feels relaxed.   Next is consultative, we seek advice from teachers, from doctors, and from coaches. We speak formally. Points to remember:

Can you share your experience in which you applied a certain communicative style?

What are the three types of communicative style? When do we use intimate, casual, and consultative style?

(Role-play) Work with your groupmates. Present a scenario where the three types of communicative style are applied.

Assignment: Identify the appropriate speech style for each situation. Write your answer on your notebook.
