BAG TECNIQUE Introduction The nurse’s bag is the vehicle for carrying the tools needed during a home visit. The public health nurse bag is designed to carry equipment and material needed during a visit to the home, school, and factory. Equipment and material are needed to make test and to demonstrate patient care such as eye irrigation, application of ointment and medications, urine testing etc. The public health bag is an essential and indispensable equipment of a public health nurse which she has to carry along during her home visit. It contains basic medication and articles which are necessary for giving care. The bag should be made up of canvas, leather, or light metal, rexin . The bag can be carried by the hand or on the shoulder

BAG TECNIQUE   Definition “The bag technique is a tool by which the nurse, during her visit will enable her to perform nursing procedure with ease and deftness, to save time and effort with the end view of rendering effective nursing care to clients”. It is an essential and indispensable equipment of the Community Health Nurse which he/she has to carry along when he/she goes out home visiting. It contains basic medications and articles which are necessary for giving care in the community.

BAG TECNIQUE Purpose To carry equipment and material needed for home, school or industrial v isit 2. To carry equipment and materials that are needed to make tests and to demonstrate care such as dressing, eye irrigation, injections, urine testing etc., 3. To perform nursing procedures and blood and urine investigations during visit.

BAG TECNIQUE Principles of bag technique The nurse should use economical method of using supplies and equipment in bag appropriately. Prevention of contamination, c lean and sterilize contaminated articles before returning to bag. Protection of the caregiver. Make articles readily accessible, use the equipment and materials available in the home while carrying out the nursing procedures in home. Keep sterile equipment's in sterile compartment of the bag (top compartment)

BAG TECNIQUE Purpose Teach the family members regarding nursing care can be performed in home. Follow the standing orders appropriately, while providing care at home. Follow aseptic technique throughout the procedure (interpersonal relationship) to the family. Make follow-up care

BAG TECNIQUE Solutions: Benedict solution Spirit Betadine (Povidone iodine) Acetic acid Savlon or Dettol Bp apparatus and stethoscope are carried separately and are never placed in the bag.

BAG TECNIQUE Special considerations in the use of the bag The bag should contain all necessary articles, supplies and equipment which may be used to answer emergency needs. 2. The bag and its contents should be cleaned as often as possible, supplies replaced and ready for use at any time. 3. The bag and its contents should be well protected from contact with any article in the home of the patients. Consider the bag and it’s contents clean and/or sterile while any article belonging to the patients as dirty and contaminated

BAG TECNIQUE Contd … 4 The arrangement of the contents of the bag should be the one most convenient to the user to facilitate the efficiency and avoid confusion 5. Hand washing is done as frequently as the situation calls for, helps in minimizing or avoiding contamination of the bag and its contents. 6. The bag when used for a communicable case should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before keeping and re-using. Bag technique procedure

Nursing Procedure Rationale Upon arrival at the patient’s home, place the bag on the table or in a clean area, lined with a clean paper. The clean side must be out and the folder part, touching the table. Select work area (clean and well lighted) To protect the bag from getting contaminated To prevent children or domestic animal getting in the way.   Spread newspaper on a flat surface and place bag in one corner of the news paper To create a clean area. The remaining area of the newspaper can be used to place articles from inside the bag for carrying out procedure. Make paper bag to receive soiled dressing and cotton To discard the waste

Remove the watch and other jewelleries. Unbutton the outer lining of the bag and touch only the outer part and o0ern the bag   To prevent cross infection Remove the articles from the bag for hand washing Keep the towel and soap dish in a clean place near the washing area where water will drain off.     To prevent contamination Wash hands with soap, scrub together for 5minutes, rinse hands and dry with clean towel. To prevent cross infection

Put on apron if necessary To prevent contamination of uniform touch the inner part of the outer cover to open the inner lining of the bag and keep the folds aside on both sides. Outer part of the bag is contaminated. Take out the necessary articles for the procedure and place on clean area of newspaper without contaminating outside. prevent contamination of equipment and supplies. half cover the bag prevents exposure of articles inside the bag and prevents contamination.

carry out the nursing procedure   Clean and wipe outside of used bottles and bowls with cotton swab moistened with spirit. Keep articles ready for next use. Boil the used instruments for 5minutes and keep inside the bag Place articles which are contaminated with infected material in aplastic cover in the outer part of the bag for autoclaving before replacing into the bag. To disinfect the instruments After procedure do the hand washing To prevent contaminating the bag Open the bag and replace all equipments to bag in proper place Keep articles ready for next use. Promotes safe disposal of contaminated waste.

Close the inner lining and half close the outer lining Bring soap dish and towel and replace them in pocket of outer lining. Touch the outer part of outer lining and close the bag.       To prevent contaminating the bag Document findings, procedure, instructions given and plan for next visit. To evaluate nursing care given and plan for future visit. Take out the bag   Take the news paper and fold it with used side inside and place it in the side pocket and carry bag. Used side is contaminated.

BAG TECNIQUE Evaluation and Documentation : 1. Record all relevant findings about the client and members of the family. 2. Take note of environmental factors which affect the clients/family health. 3. Include quality of nurse-patient relationship. 4. Assess effectiveness of nursing care provided.
