Community Organisation V/s Community development

INTRODUCTION Community organisation and community development are inter-related as two sides of same coin . To achieve the goals of community development the Community Organization method is used . According to United Nations, community development deals with total development of a developing country that is their economic, physical, and social aspects. For achieving total development community organisation is used.

Community Organisation

Community organisation as a method of social work is concerned with the welfare of the entire members of a community. Here a professionally qualified social worker facilitates a community to work for the developmental needs of it and help them to identify the necessary resources to realize it.

Characteristics of community organisation Community organisation is a process It is a process by which capacity of the community is utilised to achieve community needs. Community organizer makes the process consciously and purposefully. Identification of needs and resources Community organiser help the community to identify the needs and resources. It brings a harmonious combination between community needs and resources. Community as a client In this process community organisation the entire community is considered as a client.

Involvement of a community organiser The community organiser helps the community through his facilitation roles to identify its needs, plan programmes and to evaluate its programmes. Community organisation is a means and not an end The end of community organisation is the total welfare of the community. All the programmes should be organised to achieve the well being of the community.

Similarities between Community Organisation and Community Development

Both Community organisation and Community development are process Both are aimed at socio-economic development of the community through varies welfare programmes. In both Community organisation and Community development the unit of actin is community. People participation is the key to both process. Mobilization and utilisation of resources is ensured in both process .

Distinction between Community Organisation and Community Development

Community organisation Community development In community organisation people’s participation is important. In community development people’s development is important. In community organisation governments and external agencies assistances are not important or needed. In community development external assistance from the government or other agencies is considered important. Community organisation is used in all the fields. Community development is used mostly in economic development and for the development of living standards of the people. In community organisation planning is initiated by the people through their participation. In community development planning is carried out by an external agency mostly by the government. Community organisers are mostly social workers and social change agents. Community development person can be from other professions including agricultural experts, veterinary experts, and other technical experts. Community organisation is practiced in any community. Community development programme are mainly practiced in under developed or developing communities.
