Community Pharmacy & Management Dr. Kolpe Institute of Pharmacy, Kolpewadi Second Year D. Pharmacy Notes for Chapter one of Mr. Vijay R . Gaikwad Community Pharmacy Practice – Definition, history and development of community pharmacy- International and Indian scenarios

Patient Care Providing drug information Monitoring & counselling Safety & efficacy Ordering & dispensing medication Introduction Community pharmacy is a branch of pharmacy that deals with varied areas of patient care, drug dispensing, and advising patient on safe and rational use of drug. Community pharmacy is also known as retail pharmacy. A Community pharmacist should have good communication skills to interact with patients and healthcare providers. WHO defines community pharmacist as a fairly good, trained health care professional who act as a vital link between the case and the prescriber.

History In the 20 th Century, the government shows greater control and regulation of pharmacy and healthcare in general. Thus CP became engaged in drug information services mediator to both patient and doctors, health screening services, monitoring of drug. Before 1948 Act many people were selling drugs without any drug license and this was not a crime. After Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1948 enforced, it was compulsory that the pharmacist are working in India, must have a Pharmacist Registration Certificate issued by the state in which they wish to practice, but no qualification was required. In all the countries, a diploma in pharmacy (D. Pharm) , bachelor of pharmacy (B. Pharm), doctor of pharmacy (pharm D) degree is the minimum qualification required to register and practice as a community pharmacists.

Development Newly graduated pharmacists today accept the responsibility of maintaining patient medication records, counselling patients about their medication, diet and other lifestyle modifications, and offering health screening services. Today pharmacists are giving services as medical counselor, educators, compounder, and also dispense the prescribed and non prescribed drugs. People want to go to pharmacists for primary care because they are easily available and no appointment required , and their services are economical.

International scenario In England there are about 11700 community pharmacies and 106 million people visit them every day. In the USA, the omnibus budget reconciliation act of 1990 (OBRA-90) established the pharmacists responsibility to ensure that drug therapy is as safe and effective as possible. UAE is one of the countries in the middle east’s gulf corporation council. It was founded as a constitutional federation on December 2nd, 1971. About 2.8% of the GDP in the UAE is spent on healthcare. In addition to the UAE’s considerable revenue. Today, community pharmacist play an important role in any country as they take responsibility for patient’s medicine related needs.

Indian scenario In pre- independence India, community pharmacies were opened as chemists and druggists based on the western pattern. After independence, the pharmacy council of India (PCI) was constituted in 1949 under section 3 of the pharmacy act, to regulate pharmacy education and practice in India. A two- year diploma in pharmacy (D Pharm ) was established as the minimum qualification necessary for an individual to register and practice as a pharmacist. Nowadays, In India there are about 600000 licensed retail stores for selling and supplying the medication but all the registered pharmacists don't have sufficient knowledge about medicine, diseases and practicing, which is very dangerous for Indians. There is a problem in India to break the rules . In India all the drugs even those listed in schedule H of drugs and cosmetic Act are sold without prescription.
