Definition
■Community Pharmacy Practice is the branch of pharmacy
focused on delivering pharmaceutical care to patients in a
community setting.
■This includes dispensing medications, providing health
advice, and offering preventive services, such as
vaccination etc.
■W.H.O defines Community Pharmacist as legally qualified,
trained health care professional who act as a vital link
between the patient and the doctor/prescriber.

There are various roles & responsibilities of community
pharmacist.

1-Processing Prescriptions and Dispensing
Medication
■Pharmacist are expected to review and check the
prescriptions for the legality, appropriateness and
potential drug related problem in the prescription, upon
satisfaction then after the pharmacist will dispense the
prescribed medicine.
■Dispensing means to prepare and supply of medicine to
an individual in accordance with the prescription of a
practitioner, by checking the doses of preparation which
are meant for internal use.
■And finally checking that there is no incompatibility in
the preparation.

2- Checking for drug interactions
In this the community pharmacist making sure that the medication
and the doses are appropriate for the patient considering health
factors and the other medications.
3- Patient Counselling
Patient counselling is defined as providing the disease related and
medication related information in simple language to the patients for
appropriate use of prescribed medication and controlling the disease
symptoms by practicing an appropriate diet ad lifestyle modification
as per the individual requirements.

4- Health Screening
Health Screening service plays a important role in early detection of
the chronic diseases, and thereby patient can receive early
treatment and prevent the complications of the disease, they involve
in monitoring and managing the chronic disorders like hypertension,
diabetes mellitus, asthma, etc.
5- Maintain Record
Maintaining detailed records of mediation dispensed to patients,
including the patient name, drug name, dosage, duration of
treatment, medication expiry date and refill history and securely
storing patient’s prescription.

6- Promotion of healthy lifestyle
Supporting the patients to make healthier choices, such as
intake of more nutritious food, exercising more often or
stopping smoking and avoid drinking alcohol.
7- Training & Education
Pharmacist by virtue of their knowledge, skills and the
relationship with public, the will be able to educate the
individuals to practice healthy habits & lifestyle practices to
prevent diseases.
