We have been studying adverbs. What do adverbs describe ? Adverbs describe: Verbs What questions do adverbs answer? How? When? Where? How much?

Commonly adverbs are formed from adjectives. Adjectives Adverbs Kind Kindly Happy Happily Wonderful Wonderfully Loud Loudly Sad Sadly Beautiful Beautifully Sweet Sweetly

Adverbs He sleepily watch the stars. (how) -sleepily She will soon go on a journey. (when) -soon The luggage was piled everywhere. (where) -everywhere

Adverbs Adverbs that tell how much , such as too, very, quite, really, so, nearly, and almost can modify adjectives as well as other adverbs. -We left very quickly. very -I am too early. too

Comparative Adverbs Compare two actions. Add - er to adverbs with one syllable to make them comparative (fast er ) Use more/less with most adverbs that end in - ly . ( more/less clumsi ly) Do not use – er with more/ less

Superlative Adverbs Compares 3 or more actions. Add – est to many adverbs to make them superlative. (hardest) Use most or least with most adverbs that end in – ly . ( most/least powerfully) Don’t use – est with most/least

Like adjectives some adverbs can take comparative and superlative forms, with -er and - est :   - Sally works hard. - Steve works harder than Sally. - Kathy and Sue work the hardest of all.

E xamples The bird sings loudly. The moose sang louder than the bird. Pete sang the loudest of them all.

Comparative Adjectives Compares two people, places, things or groups. Add - er to most short adjectives ( old er ) Use more or less with longer adjectives ( less difficult) This trail is shorter but more difficult than that one.

Superlative Adjectives Compares three or more people, places, things or groups. Add - est to most short adjectives ( steep est ) Use most or least with longer adjectives. ( least beautiful) It was steepest and most neglected trail I’ve seen.

Modifiers Adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases are modifiers , Modifiers are the words or groups of words that tell more about, or modify, other words in a sentence.

Modifiers Adjectives modify nouns and pronouns. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Prepositional phrases can act as adjectives or adverbs. The bats over the river are amazing. As adjective They swirl above the bridge . As adverb
