Compare/Contrast essays almost always deal
with an examination of two things (objects,
ideas, short stories, novels, etc.) in how they are
similar and/or different over a range of issues.

2

The
Alternating
Method

Structure
The structure we will follow for these essays is
called the Alternating Method. This means that
you will choose 3 points to discuss about the
literary texts and you will write your
paragraphs about each of these.
Let's see an example...

Compare & Contrast essays in Literature
This year in Literature, you'll be asked to write compare and
contrast essays on the literary texts we've seen
Here are a few of the prompts/tasks of the essays that you
might be asked to write about:

Compare & Contrast essays in Literature
Referring to 2 of the literary texts, discuss the role that the historical,
cultural or social context of the setting contributes to the meaning of the
work.
Literature often plays with our understanding of the nature of reality or
concept of the truth. In what ways are two of the works you have studied
examples of this?
In what ways do two of the works you have studied portray characters'
transformations in response to external pressures?
Discuss the role that characters' identities play in setting up or resolving
conflict in two works you have studied.

Compare & Contrast essays in Literature
Those are just some examples of prompts/tasks. Let’s consider two of the literary
texts we’ve seen so far: The Giver and Death and the maiden.
Let us focus on the following Compare and Contrast essay topic. The idea is for us to
discuss and plan it together. Then, you'll write your first essay IN PAIRS.
Prompt:
Identify some of the forms intolerance can take, and discuss how its effects on both
the victims and the intolerant are presented in two of the works you have studied.

Let's analyse the prompt

So, you already have the introduction and the THESIS of this
essay. The only thing left to do is for you to write the OUTLINE
(PLAN), the 3 body paragraphs and the conclusion.

Make sure you include EVIDENCE from the two texts to support
your ideas. This evidence can be in the form of "retelling" and
"quotations." If you quote from the texts, you must use
"quotation marks" followed by the page number in
(parenthesis).

Planning
Here are some useful CONNECTORS and TRANSITIONS to use in
Compare & Contrast essays:
Add or introduce a new point to the existing topic:
Use words such as further, furthermore, moreover, in addition to,
likewise, etc.
Oppose an idea or thought:
Words such as unlike, conversely, on the contrary, despite,
notwithstanding, as much as, but, above all can be used when you want
to.
Demonstrate the cause and effect:
Use transition words such as then, as a result, hence, because,
henceforth, consequently, therefore, in effect.
Summary or conclusion:
Use words like overall, in conclusion, in essence, to summarize, to sum
up, to conclude.

Follow the structure at the beginning of this presentation and
nothing should go wrong!

This is the only essay you will write in pairs. After this one, all
the other essays will be individual, so make sure you all
participate when writing this first essay, otherwise, when having
to work individually, you will face some challenges.

You will be evaluated on the following:
CRITERION A: Knowledge, understanding & interpretation:
How much knowledge and understanding does the student demonstrate of the works?
To what extent does the student make use of knowledge and understanding of the works to
draw conclusions about their similarities and differences in relation to the question?
CRITERION B: Analysis & Evaluation:
To what extent does the student analyse and evaluate how the choices of language, technique
and style, and /or broader authorial choices shape meaning?
How effectively does the student use analysis and evaluation skills to compare and contrast
both works?

6
