Comparing Unit
Fraction

Unit fractions
Unit fractions are fractions having 1 as its numerator.
For example, compare 1/7 and 1/5. One can conclude that 1/5 >
1/7 by observing the diagram.
So, in unit fraction the larger the denominator the smaller
will be the fraction.
Hence, we conclude that if the numerators are the same in
two fractions, the fraction with the smaller denominator is
greaterof the two.

Example 1: Compare 1/3 and 1/7
Solution:
We know that larger the denominator, the smaller will
be the fraction. Here, 7is greater than 3.

Example 2: Which is lesser? 1/7 or 1/12?
Solution:
We know that larger the denominator, the smaller will be
the fraction. Here, 12 is greater than 7.

Ans: 1/12 is lesser than 1/7
Ans: 1/3 is greaterthan 1/7

Try These
1.Compare 1/8 and 1/5
2.Compare 1/6 and 1/7
3.Compare 1/20 and 1/10
4.Compare 1/9 and 1/5
5.Compare 1/3 and ½
6.Compare 1/16 and 1/13
7.Compare 1/6 and 1/9

Arranging Unit Fractions

•As the denominator gets greater in
value, its fraction part becomes
smaller.
•As the denominator gets lesser in
value, its fraction part becomes
greater.

Try these
•Arrange in Increasing order
1/9, 1/5, 1/10, 1/7
•Arrange in decreasing order
1/12, 1/3, 1/7, 1/9
•Arrange in increasing order
¼, ½, 1/7, 1/3, 1/8
•Arrange in decreasing order
¼,1/6, ½, 1/11, 1/5
