Comparison between Post Tensioned S lab and Conventional RC Slab Presented by: Maisam Hussain Roll no. 2014-Cv-205

Pre-stress Concrete (PSC) Structure: There are two types of pre-stress concrete structure. 1) Pre-tension 2) Post-tensioned 1. Pre-tension: In pre-tension the tendon are tensioned before the placing of concrete. After the concrete hardened the tension is release, in this way compression is developed in the tendon to bear more load. Pre-tension are mostly pre-cast.

2. Post-tensioned: In post-tensioned the concrete member is first casted by leaving a hollow duct along the centroidal axes. The tendon is tensioned after the concrete gets the high strength. Post-tensioned may be pre cast or cast in place.

Pre-stress losses Immediate Time dependent Elastic shortening Friction Anchorage slip Creep Shrinkage Relaxation

Advantages of post tensioned slab: The D.L of PSC slab is lesser as compare to RCC slab. Slab is thick so less material are used. Deflection and crakes are lesser in PSC slab as compare to RCC slab. These member increase fatigue and impact resistance. It is most economical.

Disadvantages of post tensioned slab: It is a complex work so high skills and professional workers are required. The bond between tendon and concrete is not effective, therefore losses occurs. Accident occurs if special arrangement are not provided . It required high strength concrete and steel and also the use of complicated form work.

Conventional RC Slab: Following are the different types of conventional RC slab. Flat slab Waffle slab Dome slab Pitch roof slab

Advantages of RCC slab: Usually small skill workers are required for the construction of these slabs. It is economical for small projects. Bond between concrete and steel is good as compare to other material. Less construction time. It may be pre cast or cast at a place.

Disadvantages of RCC slab: The span of these slabs are limited as they decrease strength. Thickness of slab is greater as compare to PSC. More material are used in RCC slab and hence D.L is high as compare to PSC. Crack develop due to shrinkage and load.

Conclusion: After the brief study and research on PSC slab and RCC slab we find the results that PSC slab are more economical for heavy construction while RCC for small construction. The PS construction is use in miner as compare to RCC because it required high skills and professional workers.
