Health complete physical, mental and social wellbeing-not the absence of disease It is a state of balance of the overall function of an organism from the micro level (cellular) to the macro level (social) Wholeness personal physical, emotional, social and spiritual health Quality of something considered entirely Components small defined part of a larger entity

The four Components

1Tim 4:8 Physical health Physical-Characteristics of the body and its operation Physical factors- functioning of the body system and how it governs the functions we can undertake Physical wellness includes the level of a person’s endurance, flexibility and strength.

Respiratory system Mouth, trachea, bronchi and lungs Mixes oxygen with blood To oxygenate the body. Digestive system Mouth, stomach, intestines, throat. Changes food to energy and body building material by mixing juice with food breaking it down absorbing it through intestines. Circulatory system Heart, blood, arteries ,veins. Heart pumps blood, arteries carry blood around the body, and the veins return blood to the heart. Reproductive system Penis and testicles (men),ovaries, uterus(women) Men produce sperms in the testicles, women produce ova in the ovaries that if impregnated they form child in the womb.

Muscle and skeletal system Bones, joints and muscles. Bones form structure for body and muscles move the bones. Nervous system Brain, spinal cord, nerves Carries messages from brain to body back to brain through electrical / chemical processes

Immune system Skin, mucous, other membranes, white blood cells. Body’s defense against diseases through surface for example skin, mucous and white blood cells that attack and kill germs Endocrine system Glands, hormones Regulate body metabolism (chemical reactions in body; growth, tissue, functions, mood 1Cor 10:31

1Cor 10:24 It involves developing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships Boundaries -know your limits of what others can do or say. Intimacy - not just sexual but close-knit friendships Roles -knowing who will do what task. Cohesion -being intertwined or very close.

Considerations under cohesion Do you want to change yourself to fit the others Do you get angry with others when you do not get your way Do you avoid others because they always let you down

Prov 4:23 Related to thoughts and feelings Emotion-mental state that arises spontaneously rather than through conscious effort accompanied by physiological changes . It involves balancing ones emotions and feelings

Mental factors Self esteem-how you view yourself Stress and poor management of life issues-how well can you adapt to challenges in life Specific mental disorders-brought about by a combination of imbalances in the chemistry of your body and ways of thinking that are not always correct

Contrasting perspectives Self destructive Vs S elf esteem Self destructive perspectives You are worthless You are powerless Live for now, tomorrow we perish Nobody will care Nobody will notice if you are not there Your efforts wont make a difference Everybody else fails, you will too THESE ARE LIES High self esteem perspectives You are worthy in God’s eyes His son came for you His spirit is here to be with you People do care about you You can change, build and create You can raise to challenges Setbacks cannot defeat you THESE ARE TRUTHS

1Cor 6:19 Spiritual health Refers to those factors that relate to your soul, God and spirit It involves living according to Christian ethics, morals and values while having spiritual direction and purpose

SPIRITUAL FACTORS Relationship with god Core values relate to your soul, God and spirit. belief through; He is not there He is out there but irrelevant He is there but does not relate with me directly He is there but he only likes me if I have asked for forgiveness He is there to give me what I want or what I think I need He loves me and relates to me directly so that I can learn about him basic understanding of God and the relationship with man Do you think other people have value Do you think other’s money or material goods should be yours if you can take them Do you think that life is something that can be cast aside

2. What is your sense of purpose in life? Do you live to make money, die rich Live to raise a big family Live to grow in a relationship and understanding of God WHOLENESS Being in a good healthy state, several things working together all at once are needed. Ways to improve health Relationship to God, earning a good income, good neighbors, ability to read, good food, health knowledge, rest and leisure, emotional stability, curative care, relationship to self and one another

How different components of health affect each other Physical and emotional health are tied together Physical and social health are tied together Spiritual health is also related to physical and social health Social, emotional and spiritual health are clearly connected

The human development perspectives Stage according to age (years) Factors of change Childhood (3-15 years) Engage with society Develop impulses and fantasies Self expression(self esteem), development of responsibility Confidence and competence Adolescents (13-18 years) Vocation, autonomy, behaviors and ideologies “who am I and who do I want to be” Early adulthood (15-40 years) Form intimate relationships Identity, independence, responsibility, intimacy, spiritual determination Middle age (40-60 years) Generativity Vs stagnation Generativity, stagnation-reassessing the plans of young adulthood Old age (60+ years ) Accomplishment Vs failure Accept the decline of aging, maintain physical functioning, integrate your life pursuit

Gal 5:22-23 Living in harmony God, self, others, nature A life of wholeness involves harmony among God, self, others and nature There needs to be transformation in us to fit God’s model for us Concluding Verse 3John 1-2
