Read the paragraph silently. Group yourselves into 3. Copy the simple sentences on the web strand. Aling Tinay is a hard-working woman. She loves to work. She is a friendly sari-sari store owner. She finds happiness in serving her neighbors. She is a successful businesswoman, but she remains humble. AlingTinay is businesslike when she talks to her customers. The relationship between her and her neighbors is harmonious.

Read the selection below and answer the questions. Music is really good for it soothes my feelings. I love to listen to music so I always have my small radio with me. Rock music fascinates me but mother just hates them. She told me to listen to sweet music instead and I tried to follow her advice. Now I am beginning to like mellow music and Mother is only too happy about it. My brother is a band member and he works with five of his friends. Once, he asked me to go with them but I had a test next day. I had to miss the show or I would fail the test.

Activity 1: Thumbs up or Thumbs down?   Identify each sentence as simple or compound. Show a thumbs up sign if it is a compound sentence and a thumbs down if it’s a simple sentence. Example: 1. Pedro felt that days were too short. 2 . Pedro kept his grades up and wrote articles for the school paper.

Then put the can below the sharp wheel of the opener. Next, press the lever that punctures the can and turn the handle if the opener is a manual opener .

Finally , remove the sardines from the can. 10. Now you are ready to eat the sardines but it is safer that you heat it first.

When two or more complete thoughts or ideas are joined by and, or and but, the sentence becomes a compound sentence . The words and, or and but are called conjunctions . And is used to show similar or additional ideas. But is used to show contrast. Or is used to show choice or alternative.

Activity 2: Bridging the Gap Directions : Connect the two simple sentences with and , but or or .   The King stood on a tower on the wall ____ he saw his enemy rushing towards the gate. What is compound sentence? A compound sentence is made up of two or more simple sentences. These are joined by coordinate conjunctions like and, or or but.  

Directions: Create a compound sentence by combining the simple sentences given below. Use the connecting words (and, or, but).   Example A: Kerry went to the woods. She went hunting. Answer: Kerry went to the woods, and she went hunting.   1. Timmy loves to play basketball. His dad doesn’t have a basketball. _________________________________________________   2.
