PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH METHOD Mylene S.Mangcap

PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH (PR) Encompasses research designs, methods, and frameworks that use systematic inquiry in direct collaboration with those affected by an issue being studied for the purpose of action or change.

PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH (PR) Is an umbrella term describing approaches for assessment in which nonscientist, such as policy people, stakeholders or even lay people, play an active role.

PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH (PR) Is an approach to inquiry which has been used since the 1940’s.it involves researchers and participants working together to understand a problematic situation and change it for the better. Focuces on social change that promotes democracy and challenges inequality Is context-specific

PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH (PR) Often targeted on the needs of a particular group Is an interactive cycle of research , action and reflection Often seeks to “liberate” participants to have a greater awareness of their situation on order to take action Uses a range of different methods, both qualitative and quantitative.

PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH (PR) Both a range of methods and an ideological perspective. Its fundamental principles are that the subjects of the research become involved as partners in the process of the enquiry, and that their knowledge and capabilities are respected and valued.

Main Principle of Participatory Approach Chinese Philosopher, Lao Tzu, argues that the participatory approach include; Inclusion Equal partnership Transparency Sharing power Sharing responsibility Empowerment C ooperation

Importance of Participatory Method Enable better identification of WHO is affected in which ways.( In particular they enable the voices of the very poor, women, children and vulnerable groups to be heard.) Complexities of development processes need to be understood in order to analyze WHY particular impacts are occurring.

Modes of Participatory Research The methods of participatory research includes: Group discussion of personal experience Interviews Surveys Analysis of public documents

4 Participatory Data Collection Methods

Steps of Participatory Approach 1. Form a planning team 2. Identify possible issues and list all broad groups of stakeholders. 3. Carry out participants analysis 4. Determine the purpose and level of public participation 5. Identify constraints and special circumstances 6. Select a method 7. Decide
