COMPUTER HARDWARE

AND

THEIR DIFFERENT
FUNCTIONS

INPUT DEVICES

KEYBOARD

The keyboard is one of the primary ways
we communicate with the computer and
enter data

MOUSE

The mouse is a peripheral that is known as
a pointing device. It lets you point to objects
on the screen, click on them, and move them.

WEBCAM

A webcam – short for ‘web camera’ – is a
digital camera that’s connected to a
computer.

SCANNER

An optical device that reads a printed
page or transparency and converts it
into a graphics image for the computer.

MICROPHONE

A device that converts sound waves into analogous
electrical waves. Usually called a "mic" or "mike," it
contains a flexible diaphragm composed of film or
foil that vibrates as it makes contact with the
sound.

OUTPUT DEVICES

PRINTER

Printer is a machine used to transfer text or
images to paper, or a person or company whose job
it is to produce text or images on paper.

MONITOR

The monitor works with a video card,
located inside the computer case, to display
images and text on the screen.

SPEAKER

Speaker is defined as an electrical device used to
make sound or music louder.

HEADPHONE

A listening device placed or worn in the ear,
usually sold in pairs

PROJECTOR

An optical device that projects a beam of light,
especially one used to project an image (moving
images) onto a screen.

PROCESS DEVICES

CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT

CPU – Central Processing Unit
The central computational and control unit of a
computer system, the CPU controls the interpretation
and execution of instructions. The CPU contains the
arithmetic logic unit (ALU), which performs
mathematical calculations, and the control unit,
which retrieves instructions from memory, accepts
calculations from the ALU, and executes the
instructions. The CPU often is contained on a single
silicon chip, known as a microprocessor. CPU
commonly is interchangeable
with microprocessor and processor.

MOTHERBOARD

a printed circuit board containing the principal
components of a computer or other device, with
connectors into which other circuit boards can
be slotted.

PROCESSOR

A microprocessor is a computer processor
that incorporates the functions of a computer's
central processing unit (CPU) on a single
integrated circuit (IC), or at most a few
integrated circuits.

NETWORK CARD

a device that can be slotted into a computer to
allow the use of audio components for
multimedia applications.

VIDEO CARD

A printed circuit board controlling output to a
display screen.

STORAGE DEVICES

OPTICAL DISC

DISC - a thin, flat, circular plate coated with
ferromagnetic particles, on which computer
data can be stored.

MEMORY CARD

MEMORY CARD - A removable module that contains
non-volatile flash memory chips used for storage in
digital cameras and mobile devices. The major card
types are SD Cards, Memory Sticks and
CompactFlash; the SD Card family being the most
popular.

FLOPPY DISK

Floppy Disk - A flexible plastic disk coated
with magnetic material and covered by a
protective jacket, used for storing data
magnetically.

An optical device that projects a beam of light,
especially one used to project an image (moving
images) onto a screen.

HARD DISK - The primary computer storage medium,
which is made of one or more aluminum or glass
platters, coated with a ferromagnetic material.
Although the terms "hard disk" and "hard drive" are
used synonymously; technically, the disk spins inside
the drive.

COMPUTER SOFTWARE

AND

THEIR DIFFERENT
USES

APPLICATION SOFTWARE

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP - An image editing
software developed and manufactured
by Adobe Systems Inc. Photoshop. The software
allows users to manipulate, crop, resize, and
correct color on digital photos.

MS Powerpoint - a software package designed to create
electronic presentations consisting of a series of
separate pages or slides.

MOVIE MAKER - allows you to quickly build
a personalized movie that incorporates
video, still images, background music, and
narration.

MS WORD - Word files are commonly used as
the format for sending text documents via e-
mail because almost every user with a
computer can read a Word document by using
the Word application, a Word viewer or a word
processor that imports the Word format.

NOTEPAD - Notepad is a generic text editor
included with all versions of Microsoft Windows
that allows you to open and read plaintext files.

SYSTEM SOFTWARE

System software (systems software) is
computer software designed to operate and control
the computer hardware and to provide a platform for
running application software.

Mac OS is the computer operating system for Apple
Computer's Macintosh line of personal computers and
workstations.

The Linux open source operating system,
or Linux OS, is a freely distributable, cross-
platformoperating system based on Unix that
can be installed on PCs, laptops, netbooks,
mobile and tablet devices, video game consoles,
servers, supercomputers and more.

System software (systems software) is
computer software designed to operate and control
the computer hardware and to provide a platform for
running application software.

Android is a mobile operating system (OS)
currently developed by Google, based on the
Linux kernel and designed primarily for
touchscreen mobile devices such as
smartphones and tablets.

GAMES SOFTWARE

Game software these are programs that are used to
entertain the user through games.

PEOPLEWARE

AND

THEIR DIFFERENT
FIELDS

PEOPLE USING COMPUTER FOR BUSINESS

The use of computer technology in business provides
many facilities. Businessmen are using computers to
interact with their customers anywhere in the world.
Many business tasks are performed more quickly and
efficiently. Computers also help them to reduce the
overall cost of their business.

PEOPLE USING COMPUTER FOR
ENTERTAINMENT

Computers are also playing very important role for the entertainment of
human beings. Nowadays, computer can be used to watch television
programs on the Internet. People can also watch movies, listen music,
and play games on the computer. Many computer games and other
entertainment materials of different kinds are available on the Internet.

PEOPLE USING COMPUTER FOR SCIENCE

DOCTORS

Computers are now essential tools in every branch of science,
but we know remarkably little about how—or how well—
scientists use them.
Nearly every area of the medical field uses computers. For
example, computers are used for maintaining patient history &
other records. They are also used for patient monitoring and
diagnosis of diseases etc.
