Definition of Topology: A network topology is the physical and logical arrangement of nodes and connections in a network
Types of Topology : Star Topology. Ring Topology. Bus Topology. Tree Topology. Mesh Topology.
Star Topology : Star topology is a network topology in which each network component physically connected to a central nodes. Advantages : Less expensive. Easy to install and Robustness. Disadvantages : Failure to control hub will effect entire network. Performance is based on the single concentrator i.e hub
Ring Topology : Ring topology is a network in which each nodes connects to exactly two other nodes, forming a single pathway. Advantages : Data transmission is high speed. Cheap to install and expand. Disadvantages : Troubleshooting is difficult in this topology. Less secure.
Bus Topology : Bus topology is a type of network in which all devices are connected to a single cable called “bus”. Advantages : Coaxial or twisted pair cables are used in this topology. Cost of the cable is less compared to other topology. Disadvantages : If the common cable fails, the whole system will crash down. Security is very low.
Tree Topology : In tree topology, there is one central node, and each node is connected to the central node through a single pathway. Advantages : We can add new devices to the existing network. Error detection and error correction are very easy. Disadvantages : The cost is very high because of cabling. If the central hub get fails, entire system fails.
Mesh Topology : Mesh topology is a type of topology in which every device or computer is connected to every other device. Advantages : Mesh topology is robust. Provides privacy and security. Disadvantages : Huge amount of cabling I/0 ports required. Installation and reconnection is difficult.
