4 Community Medicine

5 A system of delivery of comprehensive health care to the people by a health team in order to improve the health of the community.

6 Community : A large number of individual living together in a defined geographical area and having common interests, goals and ways of living. Medicine: The branch of science which deals with diagnosis , treatment and maintenance of health is called medicine.

7 WHO Definition of Health Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely an absence of disease or infirmity.

8 Operational definition A condition or quality of human organism expressing the adequate functioning of the organism in given condition, genetic or environmental. No obvious evidence of disease. Person functioning normally. Several organs functioning adequately in equilibrium.

10 Dimensions of Health Physical Dimension Perfect functioning of body. Every cell / organ functioning at an optimum capacity & in perfect harmony with rest of the body. Mental Dimension A state of balance between the Individual and surrounding world, Harmony between oneself and others.

11 Dimensions of Health Social Dimension Quantity & Quality of an Individual’s Interpersonal ties and extent of involvement with Community , Degree of social functioning. Spiritual Dimension Individual striving for meaning in Life , commitment to some higher being. It also includes ethics, integrity, principles and purposes in life.

12 Dimensions of Health Emotional Dimension Refers to feeling. Mental is related to knowing and cognition. Vocational Dimension : Work is fully adapted to human goals, capacities & limitations, it often plays role in promoting health. Goal achievement and self realization at work are a source of satisfaction and enhanced self esteem.

13 Dimensions of Health Others : Cultural, Environmental, Nutritional, Educational, Socio- Economic, Curative, Preventive. Various “non medical” dimensions have to be considered to make an individual lead healthy life.

14 CONCEPT OF WELL BEING Wellbeing has objective and subjective component. The objective component relates to such concerns as are generally known by the term Standard of Living. The subjective component of the well being is referred to as “quality of life”. Concept of wellbeing based on: Standard of living. Level of living Quality of life.

15 PUBLIC HEALTH DEFINITION Public Health is the science and art of: Preventing disease. Prolonging life. Promoting Health.

16 Efficiency through organized community efforts for: Sanitation of the environment. Control of communicable infections. Education of the individual in personal hygiene. The organization of medical and nursing services for the early diagnosis and preventive treatment of the disease Development of social machinery to ensure for every individual a standard of living adequate for the maintenance of health

28 RESPONSIBILITIES OF PUBLIC HEALTH Public Health has two responsibilities: Preventing the consequences of disease and injury. Providing health care to those who have not otherwise provided for.

RESPONSBILITIES OF HEALTHCARE Individual responsibility. Community responsibility. State responsibility. International responsibility.

INDIVIDUAL RESPONSBILITY Although health is a fundamental right but it is essentially individual’s responsibility also know as self care.

ROLE OF COMMUNITY Health can never be adequately protected by the health services without the active involvement of community whose health is at stake. The community can provide facilities, manpower, logistic support and funds. Community can actively involved in planning, management and execution. An equally important contribution that people can make is by joining in and using the health services.

STATE RESPONSBILITY The responsibility for health does not end with the individual and community effort, the state assumes responsibility for the health of its citizens. The constitution also provides that the health is a state responsibility..

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSBILITY The health of the mankind requires the cooperation of all nations and international organizations across the world. It will cover such areas as exchange of experts, provision of drugs, control of communicable diseases.
