•Inthe5thcenturyBC,Pindardefinedhealthas“harmonious
functioningoftheorgans”,emphasizingthephysicaldimensionof
health,thephysicalbodyandtheoverallfunctionality,accompanied
bythefeelingofcomfortandabsenceofpain.
•Plato(429-347BC)inhisbook“Dialogues”pointedoutthata
perfecthumansocietycouldbeachievedbyharmonizingthe
interestsoftheindividualandthecommunity,andthattheidealof
ancientGreekphilosophy“ahealthymindinahealthybody”
couldbeachievedifpeopleestablishedinternalharmonyand
harmonywiththephysicalandthesocialenvironment.
Modern Medical Model
•Thisisconsistentwiththebiopsychosocial
modelofhealth,whichconsidersphysiological,
psychologicalandsocialfactorsinhealthand
illness,andinteractionsbetweenthesefactors.
•Healthismorethantheabsenceofdisease,
implyingamaximumcapacityoftheindividual
forself-realizationandself-fulfillment.

According to W.H.O.(1948)
“Healthisastateofcompletephysical,
mental and social well‐
beingandnotmerelyanabsenceofdiseaseorinfirmity.
Healthisnotmerelytolivehappy,wealthy,successfullyand
absenceofdiseasebutitisastateofmindandbodythat
cansurviveinworstcondition.
TheWHOdefinitionlinkshealthexplicitlywithwellbeing,and
conceptualiseshealthasahumanrightrequiringphysical
andsocialresourcestoachieveandmaintain.

Huberet.al.(2011)proposedanew
definitionofhealthas‘theabilitytoadapt
andtoself-manage’,whichincludesthe
abilityofpeopletoadapttotheirsituation
askeytohealth.Italsoacknowledgesthe
subjectiveelementofhealth.
Health is more than freedom from
illness and disease
Over50yearsago,theWorldHealth
Organizationdefinedhealthasbeingmore
thanfreedomfromillness,disease,and
debilitatingconditions.
Inrecentyears,publichealthexpertshave
identifiedwellnessas“asenseofwell-being”
and“qualityoflife.”

‘Wellbeing’referstoapositiveratherthan
neutralstate,framinghealthasapositive
aspiration.Thisdefinitionwasadaptedby
the1986Ottawacharter,whichdescribes
healthas‘aresourceforeverydaylife,not
theobjectofliving’.
Fromthisperspectivehealthisameansto
livingwell,whichhighlightsthelinkbetween
healthandparticipationinsociety.
Meaning of Well Being
•Wellbeingisnotjusttheabsenceof
diseaseorillness.Itisacomplex
combination of a person's
physical,mental,emotionalandsocial
healthfactors.It'sstronglylinkedto
happinessandlifesatisfaction.
•Well-beinggenerallyincludesglobal
judgmentsoflifesatisfactionandfeelings
rangingfromdepressiontojoy.
•Wellbeingisthefeelingofyouabout
yourself.

Well-being can be described as judging
life positively and feeling good.
It also includes:
•Presence of positive emotions and
moods (e.g., contentment, happiness)
•Absence of negative emotions (e.g.,
depression, anxiety)
