solvent
•i.e. 4000 ml contains 1000 gm
•so 20 ml contains (1000/4000)×20 mg
=5mg of KMnO4

Procedure:
The balance was checked, appropriate corrections made
Then 50 mg KMnO 4 was weighed, placed in a mortar and
powdered
25 ml of water was added and mixed well
Transferred to measuring cylinder, mortar was rinsed with 25 ml

Notes:
•Mode of Action
2KMnO4 ↔ KMnO4 + MnO2 + 2O‾
- KMnO4 acts as an oxidising agent by
liberating nascent oxygen
-oxidises bacterial protoplast

•Indications:
–1:1000 dilution for sterilisation of instruments
–Washing of clothes of patients of infectious
diseases
–1:4000 dilution for vaginal & uretheral
irrigation & wound irrigation
–1:5000 dilution for gargles, mouth wash
–0.5% solution for gastric lavage in case of
alkaloid poisoning(morphine, srychnine)
–Crystals were used for the local treatment of
snake bite. It was used to oxidise the venom.

•Precautions:
–Porcelain mortar should not be used as porcelain
reacts with KMnO4
–Solution should not be filtered as it reduces the
amount of KMnO4
–Solution should be prepared fresh & should be
protected from sunlight
